Sorry to hear about your run of bad luck, keep your head up, mate, look at the top of the page, click on "shop" , go to popular products, RAVE 11, purchase. Give your self time to study RAVE, take your time. RAVE is a DVD on which is all the information a mechanic needs to work on the D2. For part timers like me & you, it takes time to work it out, but we can if we take our time. The other thing you should do is go to " THE GOOD OIL ' if you get to know your D2, there is no mystery , and if you are going to keep your vehicle, you should consider investing in a diagnostic tool, such as nanocom. In short , the transfer case is aluminium, the shaft is steel, after a lot of KM's, the shaft wears an oblong hole in the case, no amount of seal replacement will stop the oil leak. [ very laymans explanation, but it's close]
The transfer case is machined to place a steel plug for the shaft & seal to rotate through. minimal wear. Because this problem only occurs after a lot of KM's, chances are the transfer case needs a little bit of love, so our local LR independent mob removes your T/case, takes all your internals, inspects & replaces bits where needed, replaces bearings, seals & shims, in a modified case. In essence, you get a new T/case. With no leaks. Bob

Would costs for that job have been itemised by any chance Bob? I'm being quoted $1100 all up to have this done by my semi-local independent LR bloke. And I wanted to know how that compared to others who have had the same case swap/rebuild done.

    Cheers for your reply.

I have an itemised invoice, with all parts & prices, and work done. It was a bit more than $1100, I can send you a copy if you wish, [ & I can work out how to do it] , Bob edit, 2011 prices.

Hiya Bob. Thanks for the offer. I'm actually keen to see a copy if you wouldn't mind still. It'll help me to gauge what all the extra costs I'm likely to incur could amount to when the job is done.

I've had a bit of stuff done by MR in the past couple of years (assuming that you had MR do the work). And always been happy with the work/cost, etc. ATM though they are just too far for me to consider. Allan at Gold City LR in Gympie has also done quite satisfactory work on the vehicle in the past 18 months too. So with him only an hour away and no need for an overnight stay I'm going to give the job to him. (And I probably owe him some work too with some lengthy troubleshooting of door lock/immobiliser issues in recent times where he wouldn't take money no matter how hard I tried...so I bought one of his caps to say thanks...never enough caps in my book!)

IIRC the upgraded LT230 housing was only $250 or so of the total cost - significant labour time sends the bill over the $1000 mark. But I'm tired of not knowing if there's more than just a dribble of fluid coming out of the box, I need to drive it without having to worry about it. And if LR had made it easier to check the level it would have helped too...

If you want to PM the invoice to me that'd be fantastic. Thanks again.

I'll update the thread for other people's information once I've had mine done.
