Air Filter Grill/Vent Placement

Had a chance to pull the lid of the air box today and have a good look around. There was virtually no addition sand or dirt in the bottom of the airbox which was a good sign. The filter wasn't looking anywhere near as clogged as after the last outing to the Flinders Ranges.

Less pretty was the grill on the MAF. It had a coating of very fine dust and there were dust traces along the intake hose to the turbo. This is stuff that you can't feel between your fingers. I have had a very close look at the airbox and filter and I can't see any obvious signs of there being a weak spot with the sealing between bottom, lid, or filter. All the hose connections were tight and secure and no sign of dust leakage.

All I can surmise is that the dust is fine enough to get through the paper filter element.

It also seems that while the gulf intake is not picking up the coarse particles that the standard intake sucks up, it is still collecting the fine dust//bulldust in the wake of the front wheel.

It's a bit of a mixed result. I think I'll be fitting a snorkel of some kind before I head outback again.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that had this problem.

160,000km with a K&N in the WRX that sucked from the guard as the Disco does. I lived on a farm and used the car as a company vehicle working as a supervisor for Downer EDI (Testra contracts in the Central West). Tonns and plenty of dirt Km without a trace of dirt past the filter.

I dont cary what the lab test show. K&N all the way.

I suspected that it may do that. After looking at where the Gulf Intake draws from I think that its main aim is to reduce those large sand particals which is a problem in the Gulf states more than fine dust. The fine talcum powder type dust is the same as what the paper filter was letting past in mine. The snorkel did reduce the amount a lot. It only showed up after again I followed a timber truck for 30 kms to the bitumen.
I had none show up when the UniFilter is fitted though.

The problem that we are seeing with the paper filters with fine dust is born out by the last graph. The paper might - in these tests at least - be better than a K&N but even so they are no even close to 100% efficient until particle size reaches 4 microns.

From the information I can find very fine dust is in the range of 1-9 microns in size. Refering to izuzu rovers tests the paper filter is about 5% efficient in removing 1 micron particles, 35% efficient at removing 2 micron particles and 75% efficient at removing 3 micron particles.

There is a copy of a test done by 4WD Product Placement Action which compares 4 filters: unifilter, k&n, terrain tamer and OE paper on a land cruiser. K&N was found to perform worse than paper as IzuzuRovers tests suggest it will. BUT the unifilter passed substantially less sub-5 micron material than the Toyota paper filter.

Of course if you want to ignore the testing ;)

Hands down best way to prevent dust ingress is a snorkel with a pre-filter. Ensuring you fit the filter correctly and I think JC mentioned using a grease or something similar around the lip, that's about all you can do.
Paul, any chance of a pic of the MAF grill?

I found this a reasonable read.

My brother has used a Unifilter in his 75 series cruiser and I have used them before in a Yamaha TT650 and a Honda XR250. I know they are easier to get an even cover of oil as you can just put the foam in a plastic bag, add the oil and work it through. Down side is the of the ones I have seen is the oil makes a fair mess of the air box but if the ultimate air filtration is what you want then go for it.

I also found it interesting the other 3 were pretty close.

The thing I'd be interested to know is once they are at there max capacity of dirt, how do they perform. I suspect a paper filter will always let X amount of dust through and oil filters will evertually block up.

All I know is with paper filters, I get visible traces of dust in the intake tract. With K&N filters I have never seen this in the past. I wont be able to compare the old paper with my current K&N because I have fitted a snorkle at the same time as fitting the filter.

The other issue with any oiled filter is the residue getting into the MAF and the effects it has on it. A foam pre-filter in the snorkel before the paper would be fine.
