    I've got that whistling feeling...

    Hey all,
Got a bit of a conundrum going on with my '00 TD5 Involving a whistling sound coming from the engine under acceleration. Not sure if cold weather has anything to do with it, drove about an hour and it didn't sound bad cruising, but once we stopped, had a break and got back in it squealed as i took off. But it does seem to be getting progressively worse.

Its not the front propshaft, thats been replaced and it a different sound.

    Exhaust gasket or intercooler pipes?

    Ben.

Do a search on exhaust manifold leaks.

Take the engine cover off and maybe the turbo heat shield then shine a torch in and around the turbo manifold.
What your looking for is broken exhaust studs or just the nuts not even being there. And carbon build up around the manifold where the leak is. The carbon stain will be black exhaust soot.

If the nuts missing off a stud. Dont put a new nut on. I had two like that and trying to take them out to install new studs and they broke. So a new nut would have broken it anyway. So just replace.

    Whistling Noise from D2

Hi, Has happened twice to me, both times a cracked manifold, fixed by Triumph rover spares with a changeover manifold. Mine was a horryfying shriek when engine under load, like a bearing flying to pieces.

Mine sounded like a squeaky belt. Or bearing also.

Mine only happens in winter (melb). Sounds like a turbo bearing bit I suspect it's the manifold. Goes away in summer.

So I'm guessing you've never changed it then?

Quick update on todays activities, took it to a couple of mechanics for second opinions. Diagnosis ranging from drivebelt/idler to exhaust gasket to air compressor. Strangely, i actually took off the turbo heat shield but couldnt find any soot around there.

    It's the gasket... No question...

If its only under load then it is from the exhaust.
Anything belt driven want care if reduce engine load. They will still squeal. To test just start car. Turn heater or cooler to max fan with AC turned on, plus turn headlights to hibeam. This will put max load on the Alternator and the AC pump is engaged. Now in N or P, increase revs thru the rev range. Even just give the throttle some big stabs so it goes from Idle to 3500rpm.
If its a belt driven item this should make it make a noise. But most likely want build enough exhaust pressure for it to leak.

The exhaust want have enough back pressure at idle. But when under load it will squeal like a loose belt or bearing noise. When it does it. Ease of the throttle, this will reduce boost and pressure in the exhaust. But will maintain RPM.
I bet the noise goes away. If it was a belt driven problem. Because RPM hasnt changed. It should still be there.
