    leaking roof ? or windscreen

    hi all,

I definitely had a leek in my windscreen because it was running down the inside near the mirror. Not wanting to pull the screen out yet I tried to sickaflex ? it up from inside. Thought all was fixed except now the roof liner on the front left hand side is getting wet hard in the corner and above the passenger side window. I removed the side cover near the windscreen and cant for the life of me see any leaks from the windscreen.
Does anyone think it could be coming in anywhere else besides the windscreen ? Also this leak is happening just sitting in the rain , not driving. I'll pull the windscreen if l have to but will be ****ed if that doesn't stop it. Anyone had similar issues ?

If you seal up from the inside, that means the water is still coming in from the ouside, & it's now running away somewhere else.
I reckon if you seal from the outside, you will stop the water before it gets under/through the seal?
    Cheers, Pickles.

You could try Sikaflex at the top of the screen - in the corners - trying to seal that gap between the gutter and the screen. I'll take a photo of mine in a moment and post back.

I had dramas with leaks last year that were fixed by taking the vehicle to a glass place who had done heaps of Discoveries. The local mob I used would've been lucky to see a Disco every 3-4 years where I am. Apparently they require two beads of sealant to be run around the mounting area and if there's a tiny gap in there somewhere the water will find a way through.

There's also heaps of threads on here about leaky screens....did you search for very long?

    thanks guys

Yeah l agree re sealing from the inside....l did put heaps of sikaflex in the corner but the moisture seems to be above the windscreen, more in the corner or side passenger roof lining....... im wondering now if theres a leak from the front roof rail on the passenger side as that sits nearly above where the water appears to be sitting.....still raining at the moment so will try sealing that next.

    Check out this thread here.

The photo I posted shows where there is now black windscreen sealant (something in the Sikaflex range IIRC).

I've not had any problems since this was done.

There's also a thread on here somewhere that refers to a LR information notice that was put out years ago and it related to the micro cracks that can appear along your rain gutters and cause problems.

That's a bit vague sorry. I'll try and find it so you know what I'm on about.

The roof rail theory is a good one. Some folk also report issues with sunroof-equipped vehicles too.

IIRC there is a good chance you'l be able to see if the water has been coming in via roof rail mount as you'll see the water staining on the topside of the roof liner.

I've never had to do it (thank Christ) but I believe you have to start from the windscreen edge and gently pull the liner down in order to see this. But, please do some more homework on how best to do this before you try it.

There's a foam seal on the outside between bottom of rail and the roof. On mine which is a MY99 I have this foam perishing a bit. It's probably due for replacement one day but I'll wait til I see the leaks before I bother.

I'm fortunate that I had a roof liner replaced after some kid with a caulking gun of black silicone went crazy trying to sort the leak in the windscreen he'd fitted the week before. It made a mess that was visible from the front seats and in my book that's not good enough. Needless to say I'll never take my vehicle back to them for anything at all.

If you've got the time have a trawl back through the thread titles in the Discovery 2 section - you may stumble upon a title that covers what you're trying to do.

    I found the little bugger.

Download the link in post #9 - Technical Service Bulletin. And then when it dries out a bit check your rain gutters. Given that no one is going to see up there it wouldn't hurt to run some silicone along the gutters and then with a gloved hand (like a nitrile or latex glove) run your finger all along to smear it across the full width of the gutter. Doing this has stopped my leaks.

That thread is worth a look too. Good info.

    Best of luck.

    Roof leaks

Hi there best to pull headliner out fully and check with someone inside and and someone outside with hose it's the only way to check fully best to start at pillar height and work up to gutters then around sun roofs outer edge not the glass first.
My money is on body to sunroof sealing (pop up complete sunroof assy and reseal with mastic.
Or drain tubes disconnected at corners of sunroof (broken tube mounts or loose pipes.
Both cause wet corners as water runs down inside of headliner to the lowest corner usually front near side on RHD.

Before you do too much pull inside sunroof trim and have a peek at pipe to sunroof conection from inside.

    Pete
