It is possible for oil to build up in the intercooler over time,. It mostly just sludge's and restricts airflow through the intercooler. I suppose if enough built up it could get pushed through.. What Ks?
I would be taking the air inlet pipe of the intercooler and checking the insides, and also the state of play in the turbo shaft. Cleaning the 'cooler cqan be done with Shellite. Just blow lots of air through afterwards to dry it.

I would look at giving it a good clean out once every 12 months with a major service. not a big or a hard job. you can use degreaser and hot water, let it dry well or blow out with an airgun.

The recommended service interval for the intercooler is 48,000 miles or 4 years. The Haynes manual , RAVE DVD , or this site....www.discovery2.co.uk [workshop]..... will have instructions how to remove & replace the Intercooler. Bob

12 months is massive overkill. On A Td5 D2 the intercooler remove is substantially more time consuming than doing the same job on a D1 or 300Tdi Defender...
On a first pass I would budget 3 hours to do the job at a "check RAVE at each step and fiddle around a bit" pace.

As bob10 points out the service schedule lists 80K km// 4 years as the interval for an intercooler flush.

I put mine off for 2 years after I purchased the D2 and I reckon it probably hadn't been done for at least 80K km when I finally got around to it.
I used Shellite to clean mine, and found there was very little muck in the intercooler even at this interval.

An addition to my original post a check of the turbo hoses will give you a fair idea how much oil is being transferred into or out of the inter cooler. If the insides of the outlet hoseare very oily,as opposed to a light film then there probably is a need to do it. The same applies to the inlet, however in its case if it is very heavey maybe you need to do some investigations further. Hope this helps.
Mine at 230k kms outlet pipe was hardly oily at all.

Just had a look at the service records and mine was flushed at 82000 by Pacific Landrover as per the 80000 service interval

just on200k never been cleaned

When I removed my standard intercooler at 180,000km to do the upgrade it was pretty clean inside. Not sure if the previous owner cleaned it at all. Personally I have no intentions of cleaning my intercooler any time soon!
