Assuming they are like for like in terms of year etc. ie the cases with no cdl internals have quite a few differences.

So a 2004 case out of a v8 may be very different to a 2002 case out of a td5

With respect, that is not what the OP asked. The transfer cases are dimensionally the same on V8 and Td5 and are 100% interchangeable.

I don't feel the question was very specific and as such gave extra information, which has a bearing on it.

A case with no CDL, has a number of differences to a case with it, including the front output housing, and as such while it may indeed bolt to the back of the gearbox, it isn't identical, and as such is not 100% interchangeable.

Many of the changes are not significant. With the exception of the non-cdl TC's the differences are trivial and the boxes can be exchanged with no loss of functionality. The TC's fitted to the 2003-2004 had some changes but they are largely irrelevant to functioning - extra ribbing on the case body to reduce noise transmission, spring assist on the CDL mechanism and an extra diff lock switch wired in parallel to the one present on earlier boxes.

You can fit an early CDL box to a late car and vice versa with no loss of functionality. The diff switch is wired in parallel so it makes no difference. Otherwise exactly the same functionality and in practical terms 100% interchangeable.

If you are pulling a CDL box, and have a non-CDL replacement, all that is required is a swap of the front output housing plus a couple of other associated components. There are how-to's detailing how this can be done in car, but far easier if the box is out.

Indeed you can. its not hard, I've built heaps of LT230's. but it is information that the OP may not have known hence my reply.

the ratios are different some have CDL others dont some have temp sensors and position switches that others dont.

    Mechanically

an unmodified LT-230 will bolt into the hole that any other LT-230 vacates and will transmit drive.
