    Free spin hubs

Hi read a few comments on a video of a disco 2 in "rear eheel drive" here in perth je claims he has fitted free spinning hubs to the front giving him rwd but only eith cdl engaged id imagine that would be for strength but i thought cdl gave locked diffs as an x pretty much frnt left with rear right etc so regardless he would only have a split diff in the back with or without cdl and would tc and abs stop it i mean technically the computer would be reading loss of grip on front tyres and apply the brakes? Thought it was a question for the people with a better understanding is this even plausible? Cheers

Centre diff lock locks exactly that, centre diff giving direct drive to the front and rear diffs. LH & RH wheels on each axle are still independent of each other and one can spin. To get the effect you've listed is impossible (to lock diagonally opposite wheels to each other).

Rear wheel drive is given by fitting free wheeling hubs to the front so the wheel turn without rotating the diff, and if the CDL is not locked then the centre diff will see the front diff being open and send all the drive there.

I know a mechanic who modded the transfer case on his 80 series so he could run it RWD only in high range. Why, I have no idea, unless he wanted to cut donuts.
For me, full time 4wd all the way

If you do donuts in a LR only do the counter clockwise. Clockwise spins the oil away from the centre diff and it quickly goes bang and blows the front output housing off. Sounds like I know someone who's done it don't I.

My thoughts exactly.........why would you want to upset the poise of an excellently balanced vehicle? Don't fix what isn't broke!.

You can also get part time conversion kits to make the LT230 2wd/4wd.

Anyone crazy enough to do that, or install FWH's on a Disco/RRC/Deefer and then engage the diff lock to drive all that torque through a Rover rear diff deserves the rear diff carnage they'll experience IMO (Sals diffs excluded )

Again, I have no idea why you'd want to on a road going 4wd, but people seem to believe they'll save huge $ in fuel savings.

If you want selectable 4wd, buy a Patrol.

If they want decent fuel economy buy an econobox......

    Or cycle.
