    Injector Harness, Gasket and Dowls

I checked the red plug on my ECU a month ago and had a small amount of oil there. After a clean and another month there is no oil coming back but I still want to change the harness.

Being relatively new to all this I've read the forums and know there are posts on each of the individual parts so my specific questions are:

    - if I change the harness do I need to change the head gasket at the same time? My car has done 215k and is a 2003 D2a. How do I know which gasket I need as there seem to be several options.
    - can I replace/check the dowls at the same time or is that somewhere else?
    - is there anything else cheap/easy I should do whilst I'm replacing the harness?

You only need to take off the cam cover to replace the harness. It's probably worth replacing the cam cover gasket as it seems a bit difficult to get a decent seal once they have been disturbed. There is only one cam cover gasket that will fit the EU3 motor.

Dowels can only be done by removing the head, and that is a substantially more involved undertaking than just replacing the harness.

    cheers

Thanks Paul - I take it there is no way of knowing about the dowels without all the hassle?

    Hi Jake

With respect to dowels there's a pretty good chance you have the steel ones already so you shouldn't have to worry. There is a thread here some where with a link to vin numbers from when they were fitted. My D2a built in early 2003 has them. I can dig up doc if you like as I saved it.

Btw, many thanks for organising the Obc plug the other week. Much appreciated. I ended up soldering the wires to the obc plug terminals as I couldn't find connectors small enough. Also I ended up using a thinner cable as easier to get through the plug grommets. It's working nicely!

    Cheers

Personally I would budget for an head gasket replacement in the next 12 months despite having the steel dowels.
MUCH cheaper as preventative maintence than fix it maintence.
If you intend upgrading to a newer vehicle in the next couple of years, wouldnt bother.
The injector harness is easy, the rocker cover gaskets suck, just did both ours on the weekend, despite being a full neoprene rubber gasket both mine leak. Both vehicles have Provents fitted which may increase blowby pressures a tad.

Thanks for that Andrew, did you use genuine or Britpart bits when you did your injector harness out of interest?
