No mate, we never pulled the housing off.
It was missing the bolt but I'm sure we checked the thread and it was OK.

Looking at this in RAVE and my Haynes workshop book it seems like there's a good bunch of stuff I need to remove to get to what I need to. Is this something a fairly green but adventurous mechanonoob can achieve without too much risk? The most complex thing I've done recently is an alternator and brake rotors on a focus. I'm pretty scared about ripping into the TD5 beyond my ability to fix (with the tools / knowledge I have). I'd assume I'll need a bunch of other seals/rings/gaskets for the
Stuff I need to move for access.

    Cheers

It is not too bad, looks more scary than it actually is. Yes replace all gaskets/ seals/ O-Rings etc that you remove with new. Once you get into it not much of a problem, it just goes back the way it came off! I dont know what others found but the bolt hiding in near the oil cooler is the worst thing I found, near impossible to get at. You do not have to remove turbo and manifold, just the centrifugal filter housing. the powersteer pump just unbolts, no need to disconnect hoses, the aircon compressor same deal.
A good set of 3/8 and 1/4 drive sockets with long extensions are handy, A good torque wrench , 3/8 drive , set of good ring / open enders and you are fully equipped!

Have you tripped over this "how to" from Urban Panzer's site in your research?

Thanks Alien, Urban Ps how to makes my basic explanation look pretty weak! I found it easier to completly remove the filter housing though.

If you are planning on doing the o-ring it's much easier to leave the turbo, oil filter housing etc etc in place. You can unbolt the ace, pas and air con pumps and pull the bracket with the water pump in place. You then do the pump swap with the bracket out, and reinstall as a unit after changing the o-ring.

I found that to get at that "hidden" housing assembly bolt it was easier to remove the centri housing. Apart from that yes replace the pump with it all out.

Do I need to remove the belts to replace the O ring?

If you are talking about the o-ring between the bracket and block, the answer is yes.
