the reason I say don't put diff locks into a vehicle with traction control is that once the diff lock is engaged it effectively makes the traction control redundant.
all that great TC technology is being wasted, because the axles are locked together and the tc/abs sensors tell the computer that both wheels are turning together so there is no loss of traction and TC becomes useless.
Also once you engage difflocker you can put most of the cars power to one axle (the one with most traction) and this is when components start breaking.
with traction control and ATB's they work together, if you lift a wheel the TC will apply that brake and very smoothly apply torque to the wheel with traction, that does happen with TC alone but you need to use a lot of revs to work it, with TC and ABS you can drive effortlessly and smoothly as if you have difflocks but without the need for heavy duty axles, and avoiding damaging components.
If you go 4 wheeling now and your TC pump isn't firing a lot you probably don't need upgrading but if the pump is chattering a lot then you will be introduced to a whole new world of traction with ATB's (or truetracs), and you will hardly ever hear the pump working, which also means your diff hemispheres and axle splines arent being slowly shattered to pieces.

Rangieman, you are 100% correct of course.
A "diff lock" is a manually engaged device to lock the axles together, (or propshafts in the case of a center diff) required the driver to engage it either by pushing a button , valve or getting out and winding a bolt on the rear axle
it usually works by a sliding dog that locks one axle to the diff carrier, and requires heavy duty axles. or locks the carrier to a spider gear.
An "Autolocker" eg Detroit locker or posi-traction diff automatically locks the rear axles together, requires no driver intervention. It works by allowing no axle to turn slower than the crown wheel. They are jerky and noisy in operation. these would only be found in rear diffs, and require the rear axles to be beefed up.
for the purpose of the explanation Ashcroft ATB and Eaton / Detroit Truetrac are the same, they are a Torsen LSD and are the hardest type of diff to get your head around how they work. Hummers come standard with Truetrac front rear and centre (they are still crap off road)
when you lose traction on one tyre the diff senses it and automatically transfers torque to the wheel with more grip, disadvantage is when you lift a wheel (no traction) they stop working unless you ride the brakes to give the lifted wheel some torque bias so it then transfers torque to the other wheel, this is why they work so well with traction control - but like I said hard to explain. They are the most trouble free/ reliable diff with no backlash at all & require no servicing other than regular oil changes as you would with your normal diff.

The bottom line is the same. Don't buy Harrop TruTracks on the basis that x3 the price is buying you Aussie made quality. You are simply buying the same TruTracks that every other seller supplies.Quote:

For a front locker , personally I'd go Ashcroft as its selectable in an AWD landie. I did go the Detroit in the rear Salisbury on my defender and unlike some myths don't notice it 98% of the time on the road. The other 2% are 1 particular off camber tight roundabout and when I had a slow leak from a rear tyre, which probably saved me from a blowout or a prang.
