So, after having heaps of problems with the OEM filter clogging, I decided to try one of these.
3.5" Inch 85mm Pre Cleaner, 4x4 Snorkel Head Vortex Air Intake 3.5" Dust Clean | eBay
It was crazy cheap, and if it catches any dust I'm ahead.

SubscriberWhen I get the snorkel on , I might get my wife to stick her head out the window and check the spinning at 60-70 Kmh.
That may be a challenge!

The bowl pre cleaners do a great job But as at most times just the ram head being higher than the dust they work just fine.
If the dust is really bad or travelling through really heavy rain a Uni Filter snorkel sock is pretty handy. Cheap as chips as well.

SubscriberWow , an oldie but a goodie.
I ended up using Unifilter filter socks when I was going to be on lots of dirt both in my RRC and D2.
The socks last about 3 days before being clogged, and with a pack of 3 it gives lots of time to get somewhere to clean and reoil them.
On a round Oz trip including the GRR , when I got back my main filter was just about like new.

SubscriberI have had a Donaldson on my 300TDI for a long time .
No change to performance , and the air filters last longer .
I drive on dirt roads all the time .
So the cheapy eBay vortex intake has arrived. It's a looks a bit plasticy and cheap looking - but it fits perfectly. I haven't taken it for a run yet, will see about the noise.
However.. the maths wizards might be able to help. The standard safari intake is 9x13 cm giving an area of 117 cm3. I measured the inner and outer diameters of the air intake .. the inner ring is 9.8cm and outer 13.2. I think the formula is Pi(R1-R2 which gives 245 cm3. There are vanes in there to spin the air and so on.. but in theory it shouldn't be gasping.

I would think that the way the air is Rammed into the "Safari" head would make the engine "Breathe" easier than it would using a "Vortex" type head which has to suck the air in.
