    Auto Tranny temperature gauge

I have read through many posts on additional Tranny oil coolers fitted to the D2.
Seems most members fit one for towing or serious off road work.
In my case I'm fitting one for towing.
Just thought I would ask members what their choice of gauge was (if they have fitted one) and has it been reliable in operation.
I'm thinking of fitting one with a probe into the sump of the tranny or one of the oil lines (not sure if the input or output line would be the best choice).....

My local guru says to weld a nut to the rear of the sump and fit the probe there (as he did with mine) - just be sure the probe wont stick in so far as to connect with the internals! Apparently there are other spots but he does not recommend them, especillay in line sensors.
There was another post a few days ago about a system which bypassed the extra cooler while the oil was cool. I'm going to follow it up because in normal operation my oil only gets just past 60 celcius and I reckon its a bit cool.

I used a system similar to the 'Engine Saver' that is advertised on this site. It uses a thermocouple which really just means attaching it to an existing mounting point on the transmission housing.

In checking the differences between what the thermocouple reads and what a nanocom Evo reads (in regard to the engine temp) I find that while it is getting 'up to operating temperature', there is 3 or 4 degrees difference, but once the engine is up to operating temp, the thermocouple and the nanocom read the same

One of the things I like about the thermocouple system is that it has an audible alarm that you can 'set'.

BTW Sleeping Wood, I will post the pics of the Oil Cooler set up today!

    Cheers
    Ian

Sleeping Wood, the unit purchased was an 'Engine Watchdog TM4'. I have it set up to monitor the Auto Transmission and the Transfer Case (I have a separate unit for the engine).

I notice they have new units out since I purchased mine that also do Oil Pressure?? -I may have to 'upgrade'

thanks Ian, I'd never even thought to check the AFT temp with the nanocom (didn't think you could) - all I need to do now is work out how to do it.

I used a mad man ems2. You can choose your kit but I can read boost pressure, coolant temp, auto oil temp and exhaust. It also has a low water alarm.

For the auto temp sender, the VDO unit supplied bolts straight into one of two bolt holes in the front of the auto sump. It you get one, throw away the adaptor that fits in the drain hole as it hangs too low and snags easily. I can grab a photo or two if you're really keen

Sleeping Wood, I mounted it on the side of the transmission to keep it out of the way of any branches etc.

Mad Man EMS - does multiple functions including this.

As for mounting the sensor. There is a few blanking plugs near the ATF line fittings in-between the transmission body and the bell housing.
