    Gasket Thickness

    Hey all,

Currently doing my head gasket. I ordered the parts back earlier in the year hoping to get the car done ASAP and ordered the thickest gasket (3 hole). After taking the gasket off, I have found that mine is a 2 hole. The head has been pressure tested and skimmed.

I am planning on putting it all back together tomorrow. How essential is it that the gasket has to be the same size? Can I get away with one slightly thicker? The RAVE instructions mentioned something about if the pistons were being changed that the "stand proud" of the piston head had to be measured to determine the new gasket thickness.

I'm assuming that the thickness is related to compression in some way. Let me know what you think and if you have changed sizes yourself and how it went.

    Cheers,
    Shamo

The 3 hole will be just fine and dandy. There is precious little variance in actual real world compression pressures from 2 hole to 3 hole gaskets.

Bear in mind that wear in big ends will also cause piston height changes in some engine rotation situations. Case in point toyota 2.8 litre (3L) diesel engines, after sustaining a big end failure will smack the head with the piston crown while idling...

Its also worth noting that for anyone needing to replace a head gasket and would like to pre-order, the size can be identified by looking at the front right hand of the head as you look from the front where the gasket protrudes you can see how many holes the gasket is.

Sadly I was away from the car when I ordered, but this is a new knowledge I wish I had anyway! I also found out today that apparently you can check the VIN on LRA and they give you the specs of your vehicle, including the head gasket number!

Also, thanks for the knowledge Justin! Should be able to have her together with no troubles tomorrow hopefully.

    Cheers
