TD5 coolant leak at fuel cooler

If you are starting to worry about excessive pressure, coolant loss and pressure caps, these are all the symptoms of a head gasket failure. As it gets worse hoses start to fail. A good test is to run it hard up a long hill and see what's going on ie hard hoses, coolant escaping from the overflow if these things are happening it is the head gasket. The temperature gauge will only rise above normal when you loose too much coolant. Been there done that and wasted money until I accepted that it was the head. Also beware of after market pressure caps (what pressure:mad:)

Gives me the irrits.... the cooler ends are sealed by the o rings and retained by the clamp.
Using screw clamps compresses/ crushes the cooler housing onto the hose ends and defeats the purpose of the o ring.
May as well pack the old ones with silastic if screw clamps are used.
Just because it works doesn't mean it isn't bodgey.

Hey strangy, I know what you mean, nice to see it original. Interestingly this job had been done at some stage in the past and original clamps had been replaced with narrow screw clamps. They are going to be reused at the moment (I don't have any originals), but I can see that they should only be tight enough to stop the caps from being able to move, no need to crush the housing.

I know where Brunswick is & Ballarat is west. Seymour is North. How do I know, I travel through Ballarat 8 times a week. Unless you have moved to Geelong.

So are my hoses supposed to be HARD or SOFT after a run.

When its at operating temp.

How do I check if I have a faulty radiator cap/expansion tank.

Hi NWTASD2,

From what I have been able to glean the hoses, when the engine is warm, should be firm but not rock hard and swollen. I have found that the biggest part of my coolant leaks have been fixed by putting new o-rings on the fuel cooler. It was suggested to attach a bottle to the overflow tube from the expansion tank to see if I was loosing coolant through the cap still, which you could do. I found by observation though that I was getting a steady drip from both ends of the fuel cooler as the car cooled down after a run. The cooler had been bodged before with silicone so this turned out to be the major problem for me (I had put a new genuine expansion tank cap on though)

Thanks Designosaur for the quick response.

I will attach a bottle on the weekend. I will also purchase a genuine cap.

I don't think I have the fuel cooler issue..( I will check but I don't think so) IE: I don't get spots on the driveway.

My problem is I lost water a few days ago.. Not sure were it went.. The wife was driving and the LIMP mode kicked in until it cooled down a bit..

So i have had a pressure test with no definitive answer.

I was trying to find out about the hoses as part of my search to what the problem may have been.

I have been losing small amounts of coolant, after a long drive, for a while now. Checked everything, for no result. Today I removed my radiator, sent it away to be checked, there is a small leak , found during the pressure test. I removed the radiator as part of replacing all my hoses, & cleaning the intercooler, otherwise I probably would not have found the leak. My radiator is 13 years old, with 364, 480 KM's on it. Probably has a right to leak, Bob

If i don't have a solid lead by weeks end and I'm still losing coolant I will follow the radiator path too.
