Thread: TD5 coolant leak at fuel cooler

OK I have the o-rings and some hose clamps, 14 bucks for two of each. Unfortunately I only saw your post OffTrack about putting two on each end after I had been in to order them.

So that will be a job for the weekend.

Another question about the expansion tank cap and coolant coming out the overflow. I put a new one on and it seems to be holding the coolant in, but talking to Graeme at British Car Components when I picked up the new cap he said to be wary of a leaking head gasket if the coolant system was pressurising. What I need to try to find out is how much pressurising is normal due to the heating up of the coolant and how much should I start being sus about. I have no history on this vehicle, 237k kms, sounds and runs well.

Is there a test that I can do?

When I last looked Roverparts Plus were based in Ballarat and have been a site sponsor until pretty recently. They run a mailorder//internet business. Roverlord is based Ferntree Gully and is a vendor on AULRO. He runs a mailorder//internet business. From my location just Nth of the Melbourne CBD, current travel time to Ballarat is 1 hour 23 minutes, and to Ferntree Gully 1 hour 17 minutes.

So what was your point about supporting the local bloke?

You'll know, trust me.

The cooler o-rings harden and flatten with age. If you've been doing any work on the front drivers side of the engine that required moving the cooling hoses, that will be enough to disturb the o-ring and trigger a leak.

When the HG went on mine the top hose would get rock hard and looked obviously ballooned if you gave the engine a bit of work out. Trickling about town wasn't enough to do it.

The first sign I had was a leak at the radiator end of the bleed pipe. I fixed that, and the leak moved to the hose at the water pump. I admitted defeat at that point.

The expansion tank cap operating pressure is 1.4 bar, I think about 20 psi. Are your hoses rock solid after a good run? If not, may not be the head gasket. Don't panic, simple things first, & work up. Bob [ I have heard of people taping plastic bags to the expansion tank overflow pipe, to check tank pressurising , never done it myself though. Bob
