What should I look out for

    Hi Guys,
I am vaguely toying with the idea of a 03-04 Disco, the ones I've viewed at on carpoint are V8 at about 90-110000 kilometres and priced around $16k.
What should I be looking for..........or be scared of if I go any further

Hey Magilla, I recently bought a D2 so I can't tell you things to look out for from years of experience, but I paid a LOT less for mine. To be fair it was priced low because it needed some things fixed which the seller didn't want to get into doing.

You are looking at vehicles in the top end of the D2 price so the condition really should reflect that. At that price, they should not need any real work because the owner has been fixing everything as they went along. A swag of receipts for the work would be nice . I'd probably be running, at that price, if they couldn't tell you all about it and what they had fixed!

I would probably be wanting to get one which has pretty close to all the accessories you want already fitted too. Bars and extras add up if you have to buy them new.

I'm sure that others will be along to add input based on real experience. Must say though that they are a nice way to get around still even though mine is about 14 years old now! So good choice.

Hi Magilla, I would have to agree with Bernie, I purchased mine only 2 months ago and for that price you would want a SE or maybe a HSE. They have all the goodies like ACE, SLS and rear A/C which were all optional in lower spec cars.
A near perfect service history too is a must.

Take your time looking, there's some really good ones around... But there's some rubbish too.....

Just be aware of some ads. When I was looking I came across all too often cars advertised as SE or HSE and were only classics or just a S spec.

    Cheers

16k is way overpriced for a v8. That would almost get you a td5. I have just been looking at 03/04s and I found most v8s were around 11/12k.

Some of the Things to look out for are:

Healthy cooling system, (A whole section in its self to write about) check for any leaks including the throttle body gasket. A known weak spot.

If it has a service history, look for anything to do with the head gasket. Could, and I only say could, indicate passed over heating issues.

Oil leaks around the rocker covers, not show stopping but common.

Condition of the HT leads. If they are grey, then it may come up on your list of things to do in the future

They are heavy on the brakes, not sure how deep your checking goes but discs and pad widths.

If you know anybody with Hawkeye/Nanocom then have a look for any fault codes should the seller allow you to plug it in

    Just to get you started

    Cheers, Jerry

You are correct, that one has gone up by 4k,.

I wonder how they justify that as its been on the market for months?

Agree. You wonder what there thinking......

Just take your time, it's a buyers market for V8's. Look at plenty of them and you soon get a feel for the good, the bad and the ugly. When you find the best one you can, if your not so mechanical minded it's peace of mind to get a LR specialist inspection. It could save you $$$ in the long run.

    Cheers Craig
