Thread: Nut covers (wheel nuts that is)

The covers push on and clip around the inner edge. Appears to be quite hard to remove, unlike the locking nut cover which can and does abandon ship at will
I think place nut in vice and go at the old cover with a screwdriver? Maybe some 1 else has done it.

I dont think the normal wheel nut chrome covers are meant to come off. I have had several skirmishes with them over the years, none of them pretty. Locking covers different story

As Mr Bear said it'd only the locking nut that has a cover.
It has the little dimple in it where the other 4 don't.
A few folk have had issues when out and about where they couldn't get the locking tool to undo the lock nut
This is why a few folk, me included have changed then for standard nuts

I've never heard of a standard nut cover being changed, plenty have been damaged trying though.

I'm sure you guys are right. Me and the wheel nut had a fight. The nut is winning the first round but it hasn't seen all my moves yet. Just wait until it sees the dremel disc move.

It's to a point that I have to win but now I believe the covers I have are for the lock nuts and they possibly wont even fit the standard nuts.

I have a lock nut in place while the fight is going on.

I bought a V8 Disco 2 back in May and the previous owner had removed the covers from all the wheel nuts, why I don't know, leaving them looking quite ugly and the wheel spanner was very loose when trying to remove them. Also I found that the lock nuts were very hard to fit the keyed tool to, had to hammer it on and it was very hard to get the nut out of it afterwards too, I could also see that there was too much strain on the walls of the tool, which is probably why they tend to break too easily.

My solution was to buy a full set(20) of new wheel nuts and chuck the bastardised ones in the bin. The only wheel with a lock nut now is the spare.

Yeah. It might be my best option just to replace the single nut. The rest are fine.

I just picked up the wrong socket. It fitted on fine and I ddin't notice it being loose until I turned it and it just rolled over the nut. I can see the nut is fine under the cover but the cover is now bent round and I could get the correct size socket to fit.

Best not to use a double-hex socket as this will damage the covers.
The standard LR 27mm wheel-brace is the best option.

Hi, I had trouble with mine when I first bought the car, (disco 2 ) so I took off all the covers, I will double check my wheel brace and make sure it still fits ok. I used a screwdriver, small chisel and a bloody big hammer.
I figured that if I had to change a wheel in the field, I would rather not have to deal with it there, and my driveway was a much better option to remove the covers. I probably was a little hastie with the decision, as now I know that they never needed to come off.
