Can't Make Heads or Tails of Bonnet Release!

    Hi Guys,

Was finally making progress and took off the bumper and installed the spotlight bar and spotlights last night. Today I gave the D2 a quick service and last call on my list of things to do was replace the bonnet release cable.

The last one (now cut and in hindsight was probably fine) needed to be pulled back all the way to get the bonnet to gently pop up - sometimes I needed someone to pull the lever while I pushed the bonnet a bit. When the cable was pulled the latch was released all the way, but I figured it didn't have enough bite and the cable was stretched.

So... after 3 hours of keyhole surgery and fitting the new cable, I closed the bonnet and couldn't get it open. Eventually after contemplating and almost taking off the grill (now have my spotties on and nicely cabled) I chisled the rivets off the anti tamper plastic bottom and go it back open. I fiddled with the cable and the best I can get the latch closed is with about 2 mm showing. I tried move the latch a little to the left so there isn't as much bite in the spring, but now I can't get it to budge after closing it.

I have adjusted the cable as best I can and just can't make any heads or tails with this. Can I just ****in remove it all together and get an alternative release?

    Regards,
    Antony.

It's amazing what some sleep will do. Had another look today and where the ring attached to the lever under the bonnet, it wasn't getting enough pull due to the length of the metal on the ring. I cut that off and crimped/soldered a new ring on with more space for the cable, greased the latch and it's as good as new.

I could be wrong (as my D2 now has bonnet latches ) but on the actual mechanism inside that you pull to pop the bonnet, it has three holes that you can move the cable stop to, to take up tension.

You can adjust the cable length a little at the lever side, but not at the actual latch mechanism end. As mentioned, the ring just had too much of a tail where it crimped the wire and wasn't getting enough pull so I had to install a new one so the cable had more room to pull the lever back.

Had to remove the rivets to get the safety cover off when it wouldn't open the first time. Annoying since I managed to fit the new cable correctly with my 2 hour keyhole surgery technique using cable ties and tiny screw drivers.
