Has anyone had any success with a stop leak that can simply be poured into the red OAT. The leak I have has been there for quite a while, and probably doesn't warrant a new head gasket at this stage.

Dont do it man... Quick fixes often mean expensive / extensive work later

Blocks everything, can stick everywhere and once in is a pita to clear out when you do the repair properly.

Only do it if you're selling it soon and not to a mate!

No worries. Thanks Tombie. In that case it can wait until I can have a go at the head gaskets. Like I mentioned earlier, it doesn't leak much. A patch the size of a fifty cent piece if left parked for a few days. Cheers.

Well, the coolant leak is getting worse so time to get some work done.
My plan is to purchase a head gasket kit, then find someone south east of Melbourne/Gippsland to fit it.
    This raises a few questions:
    Where to take it?
What other work needs to be done? Ie head shave, check for cracks, porosity etc. Where do you stop?
    How much should it cost?
Would I be better off letting the mechanic supply all the parts (I really would prefer to supply them myself as I could be sure of quality)?
Looking forward to hearing from the pro's out there.
    Cheers,
    Biggin.

In my view. VSL (Massaro's). There are a number of places in Della Torre Rd in Moe that I wouldn't take my worst enemies car to (PM me for a list). VSL are not cheap but they seem to do good work and they communicate VERY well and customer service is good.

I think I know the ones you mean. That's why I was interested in going further afield.
    I didn't realise the old Massaro's had a great reputation, but I suppose it's a handy option.

If you get to the heads before you overheat the engine you may just get away with new MLS gaskets and a stud kit.

while its apart change the thermostat and the COLOUR of the coolant.

I'm sure it won't come to that (overheating). I have an Enginesaver and keep a close eye on the level. That red stuff is expensive though.
The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards changing the hg myself. I'll just need someone to inspect and test the heads once I have them off. I think I may replace the coil packs while I'm at it.
I never intend to sell the D2 so I don't mind having a collection of secondhand spares.
