MAP / IAT Sensor Clean - High fuel consumption?

Last weekend i decided to give my EGR and MAP a clean. I recently had my codes read and had a couple of EGR faults logged so I though why not give it a clean.

    OMG!

I knew what to expect but nothing prepares you for it. It was chockas!

Having a look at the MAP was my real concern and given its condition may account for my ever increasing fuel inefficiencies.

Could I be correct in assuming this amount of gunk could cause this?

    Now that is impressive.
Did you manage to see the tiny hole after cleaning it?

Quick update - not sure if its a placebo effect or coincidence, but ive noticed my very clunky gear changes have disappeared! Particularly on the down changes in 2nd and 1st slowing to a stop.

Too early to tell if fuel consumption has deacreased but ill post results up after a few tanks.

    Happy so far.

Well this inspired me to look at mine. I couldn't wait to get home to look at it. This is what I found! Before and after shots. Only took 10-15 mins to do!

Dave, the sluge pattern with the hair shapped part was identical to mine. It must be formed that way due to the part shape and air flow patten.

Its a job definitely worth doing considering the minimal effort required.

BTW if you have a red disco with your rego the same as your forum name, then i often see you near Brandon park. Clean rig you have got!

Yes Toppa, weird way it formed. My next thing I will do is the EGR but I will get my mechanic to do that at its next service. Im not quite confident to do it myself.
Yes, thats me, I used to work opposite Brandon Park, but I'm now in Bayswater so I'm not out that way much anymore. I do try to keep it clean although it could do with some lovin' now

I pulled and cleaned my EGR the other day, only hassle was getting the intercooler pipe removed/replaced but not too bad
I haven't cleaned the sensor yet, but I cleaned the EGR valve itself and it's noticeably smoother now.

Muppet, you were my inspiration (think Bett Middler pumping out Wind beneath my wings kind of inspiration )

My EGR was easy as the previous mechanic replaced the clic-r clamps with screw clamps ( don't tell offtrack!) The hardest part i found was getting the bolt back into the metal clamp on the exhaust return under the EGR - PITA!
