Today I was working on the ball joint replacement. I was videoing but the rain and hail was so loud it completely drowned out the audio. Probably just as well because I said quite a lot of bad words and shouted a bit. Probably one of the less pleasant jobs I've done on a car.

I've got the drivers side finished and will do the passengers side tomorrow. I'll try the get the process on video. I worked it all out today so I should be able to step by step it (without swearing too much).

    New ball joints installed:

    Hub carrier reinstalled:

    Axle re-fitted

    Drivers side finished:

    Cheers

I just about do. I spend a lot of time out there. It's a work in progress. I've got the plumbing in for toilet and shower, just haven't built that section yet.

    Cheers

Terrific acquisition to have a hoist. The two post ones seem to be very popular. They certainly give you a lot of access. The only prob with the P38 with such a device...apart from ensuring the axles don't drop too far and pop the airbags is that LR implies the P38 is unsafe on a 2 post and recommend against it. Not sure why if it's well positioned and properly balanced.
    cheers

Thanks again Michael, I'm waiting with baited breath to see the procedure on the upper and lower ball joints. Considering how difficult to remove and install them I keep hearing it'll be great to see the tips and trips you used to install them. I think many of us have put off this job and binned it into the too hard basket.
My rubbers have split, so your video tutorial will certainly spur me on to attempt it.
I've haven't sworn much lately, so I am saving them up for this type of job
    Cheers,
    Mario

Here's the latest episode. I've split the ball joint fix into 2 vids since it ended up a bit long. Episode #3 is removing the ball joints.

The shock absorbers should stop the suspension drooping so much that the air bags are damaged. You just have to remember that if you are changing the shocks.

    Love it Michael, thanks
It would have to be a high quality ball joint remover tool, and not a cheap copy as I'd imagine the stress put on that tool would be great.
what brand of tool are you using if you don't mind me asking.
    Regards,
    Mario

Thanks Mick, good info there. A little tip I learned many moons ago when, as an apprentice my hammer aiming wasn't too good, when using the hammer method to separate ball joints, tie rod ends etc. leave the nut on the end of the taper a few turns, not only does it protect the threads from errant hammer blows but it stops assemblies falling apart when things finally let go and possibly causing component or mechanic (sorry "Technician") damage!!
Looking forward to the second half.
