    D2 Td5 Transmission Shuddering

Hi all, hoping that someone can give me some help in resolving a transmission shuddering problem that has so far eluded both myself and my mechanic.
I have a 2002 Td5 auto transmission D2, which when driving at above 80kph (and when the gearbox has locked in 4th gear) starts to shudder vigorously when a load comes on, such as a hill. It happens most often when I am towing (an off-road caravan of about 1800kg), but also when just driving.
At around 90kph & 2000/2200rpm, and under load, the whole transmission starts to shudder, and the revs increase by about 300-400rpm - possibly because the gearbox has dropped out of lock-up, when I approach a hill or incline.
If I take my foot off the accelerator, the shuddering stops and the car continues, usually by this time in 3rd gear.
I have had the transmission serviced/changed the fluid to a synthetic fluid. We have checked out all suspension and drive train components, including also trying substitute front and rear drive shafts, and even a different set of wheels and tyres - all to no avail.
    Any suggestions welcomed.

Sounds exactly like mine. I had a seal changed, new fluid etc. anyway it started shuddering exactly like yours real violently through the steering wheel, so we tried wheel balancing, disconnecting the front drive shaft, new wheels and tyres. It turned out to be the tranny fluid. Go back to original spec and the problem will disappear! (I hope! Lol)

torque converter lockup clutch is likely the cause of the shudder, caused usually by age/ wear, and / or low line pressures.

you can try some of this Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx but it may be too late if the symptoms are as violent as you say

The mechanic put the shudder fix in as well in mine. Mine was vibrating for a good 3-4 months before it was fixed and has been running perfect since. (Over a year now)

    Hi there.
I have the exact same issue right now. Mine does it on slight load as soon as the convertor locks at 80-110 klms hr. If i push the throttle down and unlock the convertor the shudder stops. I am replacing the trans and convertor with a rebuilt one from zf in sydney. My trans also holds first gear when cold. I think this is due to the contaminated oil in the valve body from the failing sprag clutch in the convertor.
If your transmission shifts perfectly and has no other issues you might get away with only replacing the convertor.
    Regards.

Hey Michael, try the tranny fluid first before replacing things just to be sure. Although if yours is holding 1st longer than it should, then something else maybe wrong. I can remember when the fluid was replaced and then everything working as it should have, i just couldn't believe replacing the fluid could make such a difference.

    Hi Di5co,
I drained the fluid 3 weeks after having the trans out and the oil was already full of glitter (metal). However it wasnt burnt but it looked like it had done 200,000 kms after just 2000.
Im 100% that the convertor is stuffed. The trans has done 250,000kms so im not bucking at replacing the trans either. It just could have been better next year and not right before xmas!!
I cant wait to get it back. I dont think ill see the trans until the 20th December.

    Regards.
    Michael.
