1 litre / 5000km seems quite common in my experience. this is using 15w40 oil.

craig, i would pay some attention to valve guide wear or seals. these engines are hard on valves.

I've been towing a 2.2t van this week so it's been working hard. I'll have to make a few notes of km and usage to get a more accurate idea.

if your d2 has seen a lot of city use and idling in traffic with the a/c on etc etc in its early life, then coupled with landrover service scheduling i would suspect you may also have an oil control issue from gunked up oil control rings etc.

if so using a heavy oil won't necessarily 'fix' anything, it may reduce it slightly but certainly won't halt it.

as i mentioned; the high operating temps and high gearing means these auto trans coupled engines never really get to 'work' hard if used for commuting or short running, causing camshaft, lifter, rocker shaft, valve guide and seat, oil control rings etc to wear as if it had done many more miles.

most d2 and thor p38a i have seen at relatively high km that have been towing or travelled open road miles have less engine troubles than their 'city' cousins.

Mine at 230, 000 has good compression , new valve seats and a great looking original crank, bearings, con rods, pistons etc but uses several litres of oil every 10, 000...reason is I rev it each day to redline several times and engine brake a lot - manual box. Have driven it like that since new in 2002. Between that and LPG the oil that comes out at the oil change service is very clean.

It's been serviced every 10k, the previous owner of 6 years was pretty fussy and had excellent service records. Yes, I'm positive most of its life has been a Toorak tractor taking the kids to school, it's had a gentle life. I guess if using 2 or 3 lt of oil between services is my only D2 problem, then I can live with that.

My V8 uses about half a litre every 5000klms. As best as I can tell.

    Cheers, Jerry
