while you have it out replace the thermostat with a cooler one,,
Thanks Peter, very useful indeed.
I have actually given a few places a call just to get a rough price.
I've called generic 'lube' type places, LR dealership in Perth, another LR specialist - a few other LR specialist I'm yet to call (well I did last week but they were still shut for the Chrissy break). Prices from $1200 - $3500. The LR dealership service manager actually said, "How are you going to fit a 4.6 when the motor you had before was a 4.0? I'm going to have to consult someone to see if that's even possible, I'll have to call you back to see if we can even do that." Well it has been a week and still no call - didn't really fill me with confidence anyway.
I've got a mate who races speedway (did), who still has a lot of friends who have lifts, tools and space to do it. I think this will be the route I take, DYI/mate - that way (like you said) no short cuts. I like the water sensor/alarm idea - cheers.
I'm spewing as I actually have bought a shed for my block, but I'm waiting on a retaining wall to be finished before I can build it. I would have been happy to do it in there. Just don't have room where I am at the moment. Mate has just stripped an old statesman down for resto in his shed with lift. So hoping one of his other speedway mates can help out with a venue.
When I get the 4l out, I'll strip it back, pop the liners out pressure test it, rebuild it with flanged liners and whatever needs replacing and run it in my dune buggy. This will be another thread as I was thinking of switching from efi to carb and dizzy.
I was also thinking of a new clutch as this one is starting to ride.
I've ordered the following:
Turner Eng 4.6 'Stripped' (long) Engine, flanged liners, 'gasflowed' heads, H180 cam, new oil pump, new water pump, new front cover. So only reusing manifolds and sensors. Will get a hose kit off fleabay and a new radiator - do you guys reckon it's worth getting an all ally rad built with the same dims/hose connections - $900-1200 or stick to the standard one? Its a bit exy but atleast, I'll be confident with it driving in the bush or taking the family up north. Some good testimonials on Turner's website, some cars with 150k miles, etc.
I'll send the ECU to Tornado Chip for remap. Have been emailing M. Adams, but I haven't heard back from my last one, he could be on holidays at this time of the year. Reasonable price. M Adams said he doesn't have any 'useful' dyno runs with 4.6 as most of the 4.6's he dynoed have been autos, and the gearbox snatches a lower gear everytime the curve starts getting good in 3rd. I might get mine dynoed when done and send him the gas analyser results and power/torque curves.
Car in getting headliner fixed at the moment - good price by a fellow in Craigie, I can PM if interested. He said $350-450 (he charges $250 sedan/coupes, $350 for wagons) - he hasn't done a lot of 4wds, so he wasn't firm, but said if it takes the same as wagon then he'll charge the same. The Disco does have a lot of snap attached to the head liner.
I'm just a man trying to keep my boogie on -![]()

I'd be trying to fit new sensors now too if you can afford it.
Cheers Pedro, how much cooler than the standard one?
Cheers Brougham, any specific one or all of them?
You only need to find.6 extra room. The LR dealership service manager actually said, "How are you going to fit a 4.6 when the motor you had before was a 4.0?![]()
I'd be replacing the O2 sensors for sure and also replacing the old wiring to them too if possible.
Engine left Turner today so hopefully see it at the end of this week or early next week.
Still haven't finalised where or whom will be fitting it. Time is my biggest challenge trying to do anything myself.
Convo with M. Adams online again, will arrange shipping of the ECU as soon as the swap starts.
Picked the car up today from after getting the new headliner fitted - turned out better than expected. I told the trimmer 'dark grey' when I should have just said grey. Anyway, he wasn't happy with the contrast between the trim and the liner, so he vinyl dyed all the trim that connects to the roof liner including the pillars. It looks very smart - will take pics. very happy to recommend him. I just now have to clean the rest of the interior, picked up some new leather gaiters and stitch on leather wheel cover.
Now just looking for door skins and RH front quarter to rid the girl of battle scars.
Slowly ticking off the list!
Hi Brougham, I checked out 02 sensors on roverparts.com and found ones for $59 and another for $240. How do I know if the old ones actually need replacing or if they are still fine to use?

My 2 cents worth. Dont change any sensors. Put the originals back on. Buy a cheap OBD reader and watch the voltage cycling whilst the engine is running.
You are wasting your money on aftermarket stuff which is generally poor quality.
All your Bosch components are designed or 1000's of hours of reliable operation unless the terminals have been affected by salt or coolant leakage ( Camshaft and Crank sensors normally) Hope you didnt spill any coolant on the terminals when you pulled it down.. If you did you need to neutralise it will EML spray( From Jaycar.)
