Usually the one that enters the transmission at the rear is the return pipe.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Both pipes come from the front of the auto. One top and one bottom. I am suspecting the top one is the hot one. Can someone please confirm this. Thanks.

the pipe that leads to the right side of the cooler is the outlet of the transmission (hot side) and the inlet to the cooler. Its got the temp sensor located in the tank on that side of the cooler.

While you're looking there, Check that sensor (and its thread) for leaks. It might save you a costly powersteering box inspection.

Dave, I am confused. What has power steering got to do with transmission temp sensor and its thread?

when the sensor leaks the oil makes its way back and appears to come from the powersteering box.

Found it for someone who was told (by their dealer) that the powersteering box was leaking and would need to be replaced. Apparently the fact that it wasnt using an power steering fluid was lost on the dealers.

Ah crap,,,,that means I have the auto oil travelling up through the cooler and not down.

    Will fix in the morn.

So the return oil from the cooler goes to the top of the auto trans???

so long as you're not wringing its neck it doesnt matter which way the oil flows in the cooler.

all it counts for is the position of the temp sensor. (no point reading the oil temp after its cooled down.)
