    Front Shockie failures x3

    Hi all,

    I have a 2000 model D2 TD5. When I bought it in 2010 I had a 2" lift kit installed at Kotara NSW.

Since then, and sadly next to no off road driving apart from one beach drive, I have had 3x front shock absorbers that have failed.

The lower rubber bush has become disbonded from the lower metal body of the shockie and is thumping against the mounting of the suspension frame.

The first occurence was after arriving on Stockton Beach (about 2 minutes of off road driving) and at that time the shockies were approx 6 months old. The second time was about 3-4 months ago when just generally driving on bitumen (no off road time since first occurence). The mob at Kotara honored the warranty and replaced the whole shockie (apparently) and now it has gone again just from general driving activities.

The strange thing is when I asked the Kotara mob, they claim that they have never heard of this sort of thing before. This is odd, as the former head mechanic at the Kotara workshop (who since moved out to the Hunter Valley with his own business) claimed it happened to him when trekking through the Kimberely and it has happened to me 3 times now.

Sounds like a dud batch of shockies but no-one is admitting to anything or claiming any prior knowledge of this obvious product failure. Odds are it has happened to quite a few other D2 owners or perhaps Toyos etc?

Over to you guys for some possible advice?

    Cheers

I think it is a pretty common failure for front shocks as my 2002 D2 standard front shocks had failed bushes with stock suspension when I bought it at 135 KK and never off road.

I was speaking to another owner last week who had the same problem with stock springs and had replaced the bushes.
I don't know if they are bonded to the shock or only to the centre shaft, as the person last week said they could be replaced.
So from a sample of 2 , 2 have failed like that.

    Thanks PhilipA,

I am pretty certain that the lower rubbers are not supposed to separate from the main assembly, especially not habitually.

A bit disappointed that the Kotara mob are still peddling the same crap product and claim that they have never heard of this sort of thing occurring before as a standard response when that is obviously total rubbish.

That is the sort of products and service one experiences when shopping for hardware at the big green anti-christ.

Looks like the Kotara mob are heading in the same direction as the big green anti-christ.

Perhaps a word of warning to those in Newcastle...... Get your 4WD shockies for somewhere other than Kotara.

The brand was EFS by the way and I have sent off an email to them and will wait out for a response if any.

    Cheers

I have just installed raised king springs and Durashock shocks in my 2001 Disco.

One of the reasons was a failed left hand front shock rubber.

When fitting I noticed the left hand front lower mount didn't sit level. The mount pulled the front of the crossbar mount down alarmingly. The right hand does not seem to be so affected..

Now after reading this I wonder if I should put a washed under it to take the stress off the rubber mount??????
