    Unhappy Td5 suddenly overheating

Just came back from recent fishing trip, the car been serving me very well but all the sudden is overheating on my way. If travelling around 60-70km/h temp are between 88-93, anything above nanocom start alarming.

For it to suddenly start getting warm, something has changed... Fishing trip.. Was the access good? No long grass? Assuming the coolant level is correct, start with checking the radiator. Are the fins blocked.. If clear, move on to the viscous fan and belts. is the belt ok/tight? Has the fan hub got resistance when you turn it (when cold). Can you hear the fan cut in as the temp gauge rises? If not there's your prob.... If you can, move onto the thermostat. Change it as a matter of cause if you have got this far. Here's a few things to go on with.. Be glad you've caught it before it got really hot.

its also, all of a sudden a lot, hotter... (assuming you left when it was cooler at the end of last year, drove in the morning with tail winds and are returning now that the road temps are well up, driving in the evening and pushing it into a head wind).

assuming your not using more pedal to compensate for drag on the vehicle from somewhere else, and that the airflow through the radiator is unimpeeded

Start by checking out the viscous coupling.

The access is plain cattle farm road, usually travel there around 100km/h. The fan definitely kick in the first time, belt fan and radiator is in good condition. Have the car service couple weeks ago and travel from mount isa to kurumba no drama at all.

First overheating is sudden drop of rev and saw the temp gauge raise immediately, I'm able to stop it in time without blowing the engine but realise that coolant was flowing out but couldn't see any broken hose. Will definitely change the thermostat but could it be something else like water pump

Ooh.. Fingers crossed its ok. When I bought my previous Defender 130, it used to use a little coolant.. The day SWMBO took it to work, not knowing this, it 'lost power' on the freeway coming home. She pulled over and rang me.. The rad was half empty but the engine was not that 'tinging' and 'cooked smell' hot... The only thing I can put down to the power loss was the fuel temp regulator... It starved the engine of fuel and shut it down... (If that's how they work)... Either way it had suffered from early Td5 dowel failure and head slippage. One skim and a gasket later it was ok. As Blknight.aus and I said, change the thermostat and see how you go. Cheers.
