Dust sealing on a D2... good or bad?

    Hi Everyone,

Spent quite a few hours on dirt roads yesterday , and the odd track that lead to private property >, and I have to say I'm shocked at how much dust from the roads coated everything in the back of the D2.

Is the sealing of a D2 ( or land rover in general, I see plenty of comments about the Defenders ) pretty ordinary, or do I have to look at this on a list of to do items for the D2?

I'll admit that I had the windows down for parts of the trip, but the amount of dust in the back of the car and covering everything was beyond belief.

    Peter.

The door seals can be improved by inserting a length of fly screen tube into the gap, and sealing them up with sikaflex.
If you're getting dust in the rear I'd take a look at this thread

Hi, we took our D2 across the top of Australia often and it was the most dust free vehicle we could imagine, inside was always dust free.

You must have some door seals leaking, possibly the rear door. Also there are some bungs and a pressurising flap behind the rear right cubby box / dickie seat. This may be missing or damaged, not uncommon.

Wow! For yours to not leak under those conditions is very good! I find with mine the side doors are good for dust sealing but the rear is not so good. The more corrugations there is results in more ingress! Yet the door has no movement on the hinges that I can find. The dust enters mostly at the top and not on the sides . Its not to the stage yet of being a major drama though. 1 day!

Try packing a rubber strip behind the top rear door seal. That will make it bear against the top of the rear door and hopefully provide better sealing.

Mine gets plenty if I have been over corrugations. I have even changed the door seals over and still no luck. I now carry an old sheet and cover my stuff when doing dirt roads.

I finally got around to having a closer look at the sealing on the back door. The reality is there is practically none!

There is an easily visible gap between the door and the body from half way up the hinged side right along the roof line.

I'll give muppet's suggestion of the fly screen beading a go, but now that I've had a closer look, it's no suprise I so much dust and water leaking through the back door.

Do you mean the back passenger doors or the door right at the very back ie the 5th door.

The back passenger doors can be adjusted (apparently). I read it in the RAV after I had a quarter window replaced by Windscreens O'brien I could hear air leaking so I took it back with the instructions for the RAV.

My Disco seals awesome. No dust at all and the stuff up here is like nothing anywhere else in Australia by the end of the dry.

    Happy Days.

The rear cargo door. The 5th door.

When I get a second person I'll see if I can 'lift' the rear door by adjusting it with the hinges. Fairly sure this won't be enough though.

Looking at the rather significant gap I think the best thing to do is bend the top half of the door inwards. It's almost as if something was caught at the top of the door and it slammed hard on it as I can see years of wear on the door and seals but there's no contact there anymore.

I'd need a fairly thick piece of rubber glued along the door to make a seal otherwise.
