Just when you thought nothing else would go wrong!!

    Hi Fellow Disco2 owners,

I have definitely kept my 2000 D2 TD5 too long. Just had harmonic balancer replaced again (replacement for original lasted only 10 months but got warranty from UK supplier) now told I have broken exhaust stud (#1)..Grrr!
Was quoted $1000 to replace studs & machine manifold. As I'm selling vehicle I am not spending 1/10 of what it is worth.
Mechanic also told me that I will have to replace the upper & lower ball joints in front suspension. Has anyone done this themselves?
I searched D2 forum & 'Good Oil' but can't find a step by step guide on how to remove manifold & broken studs. I have a mate who can machine the manifold so this should only be a few cases of beer.
Anyone seen a guide on this repair?

    Cheers..B

your un-named mechanic is an idiot.

More than happy to have a quick look for you if you can bring the vehicle to me in ipswich after hours.

if you have an offsider who can ferry you and you can do without the car for a little while I might be able to have a look at pulling the manifold for you and setting you up for the ball joints but I'm very time poor untill after 20 Feb.

ok for some reason teh cut and paste didnt grab everything (apologies but my browser is having windows doesnt like me issues)

for starters grab a copy of the RAVE from daves interesting things. and have a read. getting the manifold off of a td5 is pretty straight forwards if you have the right tooling.

    Thanks for the offer,

I need to get vehicle roadworthy as I want to sell it & buy a something newer.
I will have to sell privately as dealers are only offering $10K or less because vehicle is over 10 yrs old. My Son has same year TD5 & is going to give me a hand to get it sorted.

    Cheers,

I bet you can sort it all for <$500

once youve fixed it keep it. (unless its got other problems)

double check the diagnosis of the ball joints.

apparently my sisters has required new ball joints for the last 3 times shes had to send it in for service cause perth is too far for me to fly for a weekender service.

    in reality its been

    loose pitman arm
worn locating arm bushes (chassis end)
    failed wheel bearing.

you only get 3 goes at them before the housing needs some work to accept further replacements, if you wind up replacing them make a placard to indicate they have been done at least once OR using a chisel give the housing a good whack to mark it. (I look for a roman numeral setup when I inspect the front end.)

    Hi Blknight,
I queried the ball joints because steering is very tight & doesn't wander on highway. Even when jacked up I cannot see any play.
Mechanic (local British vehicle specialist in Cleveland- I think you may have guessed) told me that because the rubber boots were split that it would not pass inspection.
I bought this D2 new in 2000 ($57K for basic model!) & it has never failed to get me home after 247K of mixed on and off road driving, towing a 6m boat or HD offroad camper trailer mostly on sand. Sure it's had the oil in harness & ABS modulator switch block issues but these never left me stranded.
I agree the D2 TD5 is probably one of the best 4WD vehicles ever made & will be very hard to replace. I just worry that with age and mileage if auto transmission or motor decide to have major issues that it would not make economic sense to outlay expenses that could not be recouped.
I decided after reading extensive reports to bypass D3 diesel, but D4 diesel second hand is still out of my price range. That leaves only Pajero or Grand Cherokee diesels as best wagon options for price but I like neither the more I read.
    Cheers,
    Bruce
