Look at the good oil forum. Lots of information about buying D2s on there. Btw: 2001 has no ability to lock centre diff in cabin as std.
Hi Guys,
Been looking at getting a new 4x4 to replace my current suzuki in terms of size and capability. I have been looking at 70 series Landcruisers, and Discovery's. I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice. I saw this Disco online, and was going to go and have a look at it on the weekend:
2001 Land Rover Discovery II Td5 01MY
It looks pretty clean (although it would from the pics), set up well, and has fairly low mileage for it's age, although I don't know how many of them were tough miles.
I was brought up on Land Rovers in the UK with my Dad owning a 2 and Discos and 2 Freelanders. He loved them, and they were great cars, but they were often plagued with electrical issues.
If anyone has any advice they could give me on the car in question (might be someones old one), which I know is difficult from just the pics, and if anyone has any experience with Toyota's that would be good too.
Cheers,
Rich

Ok, thanks, will have a look. Yeah I knew they have the centre diff installed, but no way of locking it within the cabin, as they thought the traction control would negate the need for it.
The one I was looking at has ARB lockers front and rear though, so will hopefully reduce the impact of that issue.
And some didn't even have the internals.
From the VIN's sticky:
It's only the last few months of the 2001MY production that do not have the CDL internals. MY2001 vehicles built during 2000 and early 2001 do have the internals. 2002MY didn't have the CDL internals fitted.Note: Transfer case CDL internals dropped from 2001MY production vehicles at some point between VINs SALLTGMxx1A726682 and SALLTGMxx1A732059.
It's a bit hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like the range selector is kinked over toward the driver, so it's possible it's been fitted with the linkages. It's a bit hard to imagine someone would go to the trouble of kitting out a D2 to that level without spending 3-400 on the CDL lever.
Thats a nice looking rig...
The Hi/low lever does look tilted towards the driver, the boot is kinked a bit, I would take a punt on it having a D2a lever especially with lockers fitted.
Cheers for the reply guys. I am going to take a look at it on the weekend, so will find out then. As you said, with the mods its got, if it's one of the 01's with the CDL, I am sure they will have linked up.
A zoom in and it looks like it's got the 'Diff Lock' design, and as said it's kinked so I'd wager it's got it too.
Looks to be a fairly tidy example with some good extras, but even so I wouldn't pay nearly 19k for it.
For that price I would be finding out if its had,
Head gasket done
oil pump bolt checked
Check the hood lining to see if sagging
Has it got a water saver alarm or similar on the coolant system
See if its got a good service history, might only have 180,000 odd ks but its still a 13 yr old car.
Cheers Ean
Thats a hell of alot of money for a pre facelift disco.
If it has a full service history and proof of maintenance and repairs then you should be ok. It will be a very capable and comfortable truck.
My V8 has just turned 14 and purrs along nicely. I know not very helpful but re-assuring.
You need to allow a couple of grand for immediate fixes, then keep a close eye on things.
Looks a bit pricey.
Cheers, Jerry
