Check prop shaft yourself, don't rely on mechanics

Recent trip coming down from Mt Isa Qld to Ballarat Vic, front prop shaft decided to let go. It damage my diff lock assembly unit and some other parts.

If anyone feel the driver floor vibrate or knocking noise, I would suggest to have a look. I'm lucky enough that Sean from rover part advise the mechanic in cunnamulla what to do to keep me going, it found out that my case is not the worst as no oil leaking from any other components.

Well, got a new propshaft for $550, used diff lock assembly $600 from TRS, o-ring for transfer case and re-seal, gearbox oil cooler tubes. Guess I could have save myself $2000-$2500 if I check it or change it before the trip if I know that's a common problem.

Has anyone tried to fit a capture loop to stop the shaft thrashing around?

I recall Ford fitted them to GTHOs as someone dropped the front of a tailshaft on a Yump, and it came through the floor and took his leg off.
I might look at making up one for the rear of the shaft if I have some spare time, as better than it destroying everything.

My initial thought is a large ring , fitted forward of the cross member.

Interesting that you say that, the original Series LWB have the rear prop shaft passing through a chassis x-member, this has been deleted in the Defender by the design having the bottom of the chassis cut away and was never part of the RRc and Discos.

I am currently pondering the issue for a conversion.

The chassis hole were a frequent part of various cars, like Jags etc.

    rhino conduit clamp

initially thought of a series axle strap but prob not rigid enought and would rub on the shaft but how about a rhino 2 piece conduit clamp. allows easy removal by undoing one or two bolts to remove one piece of the clamp, made of aluminium light and hopefully strong enough, just need to bolt to underside of vehicle in an appropriate position. should work well. positioning would be key though as ideally on a single shaft you may need two such clamps in case the front or rear of one shaft goes. just a thought !

You see them on trucks they are merely a length of 50mm by 2mm flat bar looped under the shaft. It doesn't have to touch the prop shaft, but does need to be a little lower than the max depression of the shaft on max articulation.

It is something that would be subject to hits on obstacles off road, so may be more trouble than the problem it attempts to solve. Particularly when regular maintenance and inspection could be cheaper.

    Not always.

Have seen some, on older trucks which are sustantially less engineered.
