I had very similar noise at same rev range and it was a crack in the convoluted section of the exhaust pipe near top of exhaust manifold, sorry dont know its proper name, always came on at 2500 at went away reving up around 2800, worth a look,

    cheers

That Disco TD5 auto vibration thing can be caused by a number of items....

    (passenger side)
*Heat shield over exhaust manifold lower bolt mount cracks.
*Heat shield over exhaust manifold rubs against oil cooler pipe at back of block.
*oil cooler pipe that goes round back of engine, broken mount or bolt fallen out (or never put back)
*Turbo to intercooler pipe drops down and long pipe section rubs against plastic inner trim.
*underneath, coolant pipe mount broken rubs again chassis
*first section of exhaust, the flexi joint part rattles within itself.
*further back exhaust rubs again heat shield on gearbox mount.
    *exhaust rubber ring mounts broken.

    (drivers side)
*Auto trans cooler pipes drop down onto engine.
*Auto trans cooler pipes rubbing again trans housing (from when the front shaft gave way and bashed them against the box).
*fuel cooler mount bolts have fallen out (or never put back) and cooler is rattling.
    *engine oil filler cover rattling.
    *handbrake assembly rattling.
*the almost L shaped chunk of metal (some sort of harmonic dampening thing??) bolted to the back of the transfer case near the handbrake assy comes loose.
*Exterior A trim (both sides) broken clips.

(mechanical issues, which obviously can have other signs)
    *engine mounts
    *front harmonic balancer
*turbo modulator pipes split or popped off.
*front shaft on its way out.

Driving a D2 TD5 auto without that vibration buzz between shifts is a pleasure.

    Regards
    Daz

Now that conjures up a vision and a half! You hanging under the car movie style!
No, a much easier (and safer) way is just an inspection of the joint, Disco Muppet had some pics in a post of his on the way out somewhere on here. Any movement sideways or weaing marks is what to look for.

thanks all some more things to check. but least I know bit more at where to look. the front exhaust section does move a lot sidw to side but not surw if normal. it doesn't vibrate between shifts or anything. it just makes a noise. for 315000 kms my trans is lovely haha yeah id do that movie style, scalp myself probably as my hair is long like most women's haha

i have the exact same noise mate.
Will even do it rolling down a hill with no load. As soon as it hits 2800 rpm the noise appears and stops when gets below 2500 rpm.

It almost sounds like timing chain rattle i have had in my old VN commodore as a teenager.

I will check everything mentioned in this post over weekend and report back.

I have however already removed the exhaust/turbo manifold shield. Noise still there.
