    D2a auto

    Gday All,

Just wondering how many ks you can expect to get out of a D2a auto box before it will need attention.

I know its a loaded question , but have heard 230-250,000ks and they need rebuilding, is this what people are finding.

    Cheers Ean

240 thou-ish, no probs. The worst is the "I've heard" stories.

I've also heard that Hi-lux's are good off road, but I've never seen it proven yet!!

I think the answer is "it depends"
If you use normal Dexron 111, never change the oil, tow a heavy caravan a lot and drive with a heavy foot to unlock the Torque converter then 250KK is the best you can expect.

If you use a quality synthetic, make sure you drive to keep the torque converter locked as much as possible, change the fluid every 40KK, and don't tow a heavy caravan, I think 250 KK is the least you can expect.

    Hi,

I can only speak from experience:

I have 287k on the ES here in PNG attached to a V8, it's as smooth as silk, not wanting to attract fate. Very easy to drive. No service history what so ever, but had the oil changed when I bought it.

The TD5 i have has 177k on it, still smooth but not like the above, this is with full LR service history, and again the LR specialist in the UK changed the fluids before exporting. You have to drive it in a very different way to the V8.

I,ve also had 2 D2's in Oz with no issues, I was always told they were "bullet proof", not sure about that but if you go on any forum, it tends to be the XYZ switch that is every bodies heartache rather than the box failing.

    Cheers Jerry

360k without removal or repairs, done some heavy towing without an extra cooler, oil was burnt a couple of times and dumped it all out on the road once (refilled and worked perfectly). I change the fluid every 30k or so, whenever I get the motivation up. Also still using the original connectors to the cooler, never been disconnected.

When I was originally looking to purchase a D2 (earlier model than the D2a), JC advised to budget for a replacement auto tranny for any near or over 200,000km that hadn't yet been done...

I seem to recall something about the torque converters usually being the failure point and spitting metal bits all through the tranny. I have replaced the TC in my D2a with an Ashcroft HD unit, hopefully I'll get an extended life out of it now...

    Ean,

My D2 has done 255k at 250k and luckily after I got back to Perth from my trip last year I started to get a flare on the 2 - 3 change some I'm planning on a box change out soon.

TD5 auto -- approx 310,000 Kms. Serviced as per Land Rover specified. Extensive off-road use. No problems with auto -- running well.
