D2 50mm + Lift, Castor Correction, Crossmember Spacing, Watts Link, Steering Rods...

I am currently going over the D2 at the moment and sorting out some supsension and steering issues.

    Suspension Issues:
    • Clunk from suspension via sideways movement.
    • Flog out Watts Link bushes regularly.
    • Watts link binding on arms and over rotating for and aft due to diff rotation.
    • Rear shocks unable to control bounce.
    Steering Issues:
    • Excessive play in steering wheel
    • Wheel alignment issues
Firstly I will start with findings and solutions regarding the suspension. I have a +50mm lift with Dobinson Coils and Bilstein extended 994 & 995 shocks and ACE, the setup is good, however:
    • Rear shocks are too soft, this will be fixed by going to Bilstein 7100's with suitable valving.
    • All suspension bushes are being repalced with Superpro, they are mostly 12 yers old now.
    • Rear radius arm bushes are to be repalced with castor corrected bushes, now I have never heard of anyone else being required to do this, however when looking under the vehicle at ride height it is obvious the watts link is rotated for and aft, at full droop the rotation is so significant that the rotation of the watts link forwards hits the arm / bolt on top of the diff housing.
    • In addition to the castor bushes, modified watts link arms will be fitted.
    • Front drive shaft hits crossmember (see photo below), spacers will be fiited and extended brake lines and ABS lines have already been installed.
In regards to the steering issues:
    • Vagueness in the steering has been corrected through the use of castor correcetd bushes.
    • Excessive play in steering, a new steering column from firewall knuckle to steering box knuckle is being fitted tomorrow, so fresh uni joints throughout.
    • Steering box will have a minor tweak to try and take up any additional straight line slack.
    • Wheel alignment is slightly out, steering rods cannot be adjusted properly as they are siezed, I want to replace the steering arms and panhard rod with an adjustable item.
So, hopefully this asssits others with their supension setups, while many will say that a 50mm lift does not require a lot of these modifications, however I have found that in my case they do, especially with the combination of Bilstein 994 & 995's as well as ACE.

Does anyone have any recomendations for good quality, steering rods with greasable joints?

I'm going to buy 4 degree white tiger castor correction plates from LRA (Discovery 2) so I can still use standard castor bushes. Makes replacement cheaper and easier and if I want to return to stock I can easily.

I have the solid rods from Paddock spares. PM18 or something like that is the part number. The ends that come with them are not greasable, but you could always buy and swap with greasable units.

Price wish they are a third of all the other brands, I've had no issues with them. They're definitely solid. I think they're priced right and the other brands are rip offs as it's just a rod!

Mate it certainly came up! I have a 45 dobo lift in the rear and it is nowhere near that height although I have gas gear in the back.

I think that the big wheels also help make it look high. When I changed from 18" with 32" tyres to 16" with 33" the vehicle just looked lower - despite being the opposite!

Unloaded it measured out at about +65mm, when filled with all the camping gear it is +50mm.

The guard cut and 18's with 33's do make it look bigger

Just remember than anyone with the Bilstein 994 & 995 shocks will have the same amount of suspension drop as mine so should check the clearances for the driveshaft and length of brake and ABS lines.

Arghh...I see. Yes and didn't realise there was a guard cut too. I will check drop. I have the 995 and thought the forums typically said stock hoses and abs looms were just on ok for that drop....better check.

It's interesting how we all have different likes. I find the 995 excellent with 100kg go LPG inc tanks and 25kg of misc gear before nose weight of 200kg for my 2 tonn boat. The other day at GVM camping I found the ride and rebound control brilliant. I don't like suspension wallow either. Is it the extra lift you are trying to compensate for with stiffer shocks ...ie is it body roll?

    Cheers
