    Just make sure the the inlet tube isn't broken at the silencer and sucking in water and dust.

    I assume the silencer is the cylinder rearward of the compressor

    Yes that's it.
    The plastic spigot usually breaks off.
    It can sit there in place quietly letting crap in.

    You would have noticed it if you replaced the compressor
