Pre-purchase checklist for 03 - 04 V8 Discovery 2
Does anyone have a pre-purchase checklist of things to look into before buying an 03 - 04 V8 Discovery 2? I've learned that I should have looked into a lot of things before I bought my 01 Discovery TD5. However, $$$ and patience has seen me through and the girl is running really well now. I plan on taking what I've learned and applying to the next Disco but just wondering if someone has a list.
Things I've learned about my 01 TD5.
- Front drive-shaft wears out.
- Fix pulleys immediately if you hear a bearing squeak.
- Check the locking mechanism on the rear-door.
- Check the passenger and driver side windows to make sure they open properly and are not coming off the rollers.
- If the key is sticky in the ignition, just get the ignition implement replaced.
- Fuel pump goes out.
- Lug-nuts get very STICKY after you go through a river.

- window regulators
- two keys and two that work
- Front window plenum not cracked
- Brake master cylinder for leaks
- 3 amigos
- Rocker Cover Gasket leaks
- Front Prop Shaft
- Suspension (shocks)
- Front dash cover (for the speed and Tacho)
- A/C service records
- When the radiator was last replaced.
- Service records
- Fluid in the rear brake lights
- dis-coloured front lenses
- Look for land rover badges on all front and rear lenses
- Rubber seals around the alpine windows
- filter foam on the plenum
There's a start

Jesus, Ive had none of that in my 99.
Coolant leaks - the head gasket hates heat. and if you run it out of water it will blow a head gasket.
Oil leaks (any) - you have to pull apart everything to fix an oil leak which is expensive in labour hours.
Ive had all of my door locks replaced but I assume that got fixed on later models.
Centre diff lock installed? Its vital if your off road.
A rattle in the catalytic converter. the internals have let go, its usually oil related.
The stereo works properly? Mine never did really. At least the radio works well.
Fuel economy. Take it for a drive and check. Mines sucking 22l/ 100km a bit high I think an o2 sensor is gone.
That's my list. Its a great car that keeps on going 220k now and its doing 1000 a week for work.
Good luck

Just remembered the front tail shaft but by now every single one of those uni joints would have failed I believe anyway. Greaseable front shaft would be great and I think some people have diverted the ac outlet to help the problem.

I love my 2003 Disco V8.
Oil leaks at Rocker cover gaskets, front timing cover seal and rear main.
Check that OAT coolant has always been used.
Airbags.
Service history.
Test drive, listen for rattle in engine between 2000-3000 rpm around 2500, rings on way out/gone.
Check for visible signs of coolant leaks, even if engine has been cleaned, check after test drive, at front and rear both heads.
Mine has just started weeping from a head gasket, due to a bloody hose leak that I didn't repair earlier. Apart from that I have replaced one sls airbag in 4 years and 100000km. It has been more reliable than my wife's 2000 Saab 93 Aero Turbo convertible, 2000 Ford Falcon 4.0, 2000 Ford Transit 2.3 Petrol (ended up fitting a LandRover clutch to that) and others.
I don't understand people slagging LandRover reliability, if well maintained they are just as reliable as most other vehicles, even Toyotas.
