    Unhappy engine running rough

    2002 d2 td5 auto

    Hi,

Hoping for some advise. Just returned from a fairly lengthy trip. refuelled 6 times during the trip (SA Eyre peninsular and back). Weather atrocious, rain, sometimes heavy, during most of the drive. Now I'm getting intermittent rough running, with a lot of engine (I think) vibration, which means I cant exceed around 80k. Stop the engine and restart and USUALLY all ok again.

What I'm thinking is a bad load of fuel somewhere, but in that case why intermittent?

    Any advise much appreciated.

For a starting point have a look at the red plug on the ECU.
If the injector loom is weeping oil into the main harness it could cause your symptoms.

It could be bad fuel or a list of other things too.
Is it blowing black smoke when it plays up?
Is the turbo wast gate jammed or tight?
Is it possible the intercooler hoses are delaminating?
Are the hose on the wast gate modulator OK?

Let us know what you find.
    Cheers, Kyle.

Thanks for the 2 replies. Further info: I checked it on a Nanocom and it lists several faults as: "Injector 2 peack (literally) charge long (current)".

Apart from the obvious inj 2, can someone plse explain the rest?

    Injector peak

Injector peak charge too long would point to a fault in
the injector harness under cam cover.

It usually means that you are not getting a good conection to
an injector the oil is acting like an insulator.

This may be checked by going onto live data on Nanocom you
might also see a higher figure in the cylinder imbalance number
for that cylinder 0<5 is really good 5<10 is ok above that is a
    problem.
These figures are at idle only when reved figures are of no use
you want to measure at a constant speed.

It could be a fault at certain temp or speed you might get it cured
short term by cleaning conections at all point between the
injectors and the harness multi plug.

If you have not replaced the harness in the last 3+years 50k
it might be worthwhile fitting a new genuine harness (leoni)
to iliminate a possable fault the longer you run the engine with
the fault the more damage you will do to your engine.

Many thanks for the replies/suggestions. Turned out to be the old "oil-in-the-wiring-loom" problem.

My trusty Landy mechanic sorted it - in return for a few dollaroes - and she's all sweet again.

Has there ever been a permanent fix for this problem?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
