    Diff Oil Replacement

    Hi all,
Changed the diff oils at 160k (bout the D2 at 150k), and have just done another change at 240k. Service manual says to change every 160k, but got excited and did them anyway. Glad I did, they were thick and grey, with a fair bit of sludge on the magnet. No big bits though.

How often do people change their diff oils? I'm tempted to replace them again at 10k or 20k just to see how they're going.

I think it depends on usage. If you're off-road, going through water/mud and towing I'd say 10-20k would be a good way to keep an eye on how it's going and prevent any extended running with contaminated oil should water get in there.
    Cheers

I do all the above. Changed my diff oil at 200k, clean as and good for chainsaw bar oil. It is possible that it was changed at 140k as that was the last time I took it to a shop and asked them to do a pre cape york service but I suspect not.

Looks like something is on the way out. Unless you open your diff and clean it all up there will be a lot of fine metal particles in your oil even now. If getting stuck in the middle of nowhere is possible then I would suggest inspecting for the problem. If you will not be remote then possibly the easiest thing is to change the oil every 20k and wait for noise. It may be as simple as water getting in so check for that too.

I change mine every 20000. Cheap insurance and piece of mind. Change your filler pugs over to the brass ones also.

Same here, mine gets dunked regularly though rivers etc, and the diff oil is relatively cheap and really quite easy to change

Thanks all. Already installed the brass plugs some time ago. Think I will give it 10k and replace the diff oils again. Centre diff was fairly clean as it turns out.

My recollection from my LR days was every 40 000km, not every 160 000km.
