D2 Td5 front 2" lift springs, what to get?

    Hi all,

I have finally got the D2 I've been waiting for, for 4 years!

It's a 2001 Td5 Manual, I'm setting it up as a tough tourer, this is the 3rd Land Rover I'll have set-up, so I have a pretty good idea of where I want it to get to, it doesn't need to be a tuff truck as I'm keeping the Rangie for that, but it has to be able to get to where the Rangie is, should it be broken or stuck... This means a fairly decent suspension is in order...

Car will have an ARB bar with winch, steel rear bar, light-ish sliders, dual batteries, it will also be running rear air springs from an SLS car...

I've been in touch with suspension stuff, who have quoted me for KRFR-06HD front springs, which are King's extra heavy duty +2" springs.

These are a high rate spring, which I don't like. And am currently in discussions with them about ordering custom springs, unless I can find a better alternative.

Can anyone recommend an off the shelf spring capable of carrying the weight of a Td5, ARB bar and winch, while still giving a true 50mm lift (not a 40mm lift), but with a rate down closer to 200 lb/inch? I want to keep this thing soft, retaining ride quality, but not sacrificing height or performance.

Let me know if you've found something!

    Cheers
    Will

As you seem to be aware the King Springs are only a 40mm lift.

It may be worth speaking to Les Richmond Automotive as they offer a range of coil springs that are Land Rover specific - see Coil Springs

    Thanks guys,

Tombie are you talking about a specific off the self coil? Or is that a rate you'd pick for custom coils.

I've just been talking to Kings about any off the shelf alternatives to their KRFR-06HD, unfortunately nothing else has the same tail on the bottom of the spring that D2's do.

My RRC is running Kings standard rears up front, which give about a 55mm lift over standard guard heights (KRRS-02).

My latest idea is to use some D2 rear lower spring seats (or D1 front) up front, meaning I can fit either KRRS-02 or KRRR-02 springs in (230 rate), hopefully giving me my 50mm lift (I have a set of both of these that I can try out.

The alternative is to get custom made coils.

Will report back on my findings.

    Cheers

There's other companies that also make and sell coil springs to suit the front of the D2 other than King Spring. But you seem quiet intend on going with King? I have no issue with King Springs, I have their products in my Pursuit ute and have been super happy with the result, but I'm surprised your so intent on their product when it's not what your actually wanting...

    Did you speak to LRA?

If you use spacers that will help you give you lift but won't help in increasing you suspension travel. You'll also need to use longer bump stops then as the spacers will lift the shock absorber too.

LRA also sell spacers to suit - they're 6mm think and they claim that up to 3 can be used.
we have shims available. Each shim is 6mm thick and can be stacked 3 high giving 6mm, 12mm and 18mm. The shims fit under the lower spring plate and are bolted in via the lower spring plate.

Do you know what the spring rate is for KRFR-06HD?

    Bloody heavy.
It's what I have, 260lb or something silly.

Quite the opposite actually, I hate the high rates that Kings use, the only reason I'd use them is that I can get them quite cheaply from Rovacraft, and also because I have a few different coil sets left at home from my Range Rover, so if I put RRC lower spring seats in the front I can use those coils (will even try standard D2 rears up front once I install the airbags).

So the springs I have at the moment will be the ones I try first, and I know the kings are a quality product...

I'd be happy to use any alternative, they just seem harder to get tech info from, and any other spring manufacturer also seems to jack the rates right up high for their off the shelf springs too.

I'll get in touch with LRA tomorrow, forgot to call them in my lunch break.

I'm not really a fan of spacers, would only ever use leveling shims like what you alluded to, but nothing to actually give lift.

According to Brad at Suspension stuff (who used to work for King springs) the KRFR-06HD measures at 240lb/in, When I rang kings they didn't even have it on the spec sheet... But Cameron (Muppet) has them and says they're rock hard, which agrees with the 280 rate I've heard before...

So first port of call is to try what I have, if the KRRS-02 rear RRC springs give a good ride, but not enough lift I can use KRRR-02 RRC rears that are also off the shelf, (unless I pinch the set from the RR), it's all about using what I know...

    Cheers

From memory. I was told Standard is 150lbs, Dobinsons comforts are 190Lbs and Dobinsons Heavy are 220Lbs? Not exactly sure on the last though. I posted here somewhere when I knew.

Hmm so they have a comfort spring... I'll give them a call tomorrow! Thanks Joel

Just have to find something soft that will hold the bar, winch and second battery up!

    Cheers
