Thread: TD5 and Castrol Magnatec Diesel 5w - 40w

I'm sure people will cringe but I have been using it for a few years now on both my cars with no obvious ill effects.

It seems to have the a1/b1 and a2/b2 certification I think?

The only issue for me is that when its due for a change it really is due and you can hear that when its getting there.......the engine is a bit more rattly on start up.

You can feel the difference when you change it too.

I used the Penrite for the first two years like everybody recommended but I found my engine was actually a bit noisier.

So now Im going for shorter changes.
I dont know how good it is to go BACK to penrite after you have started using it..

It also says it use synthetic technology not thats is a synthetic oil.

I'm not saying use it but that's my experience anyway.

I personaly use Castrol Edge 0w/40w and have done for the last 6 years no ill effeects and change 10k intervals along with filters.My theory being oil and filters are cheap compared to a rebuild. By the way my TD5 HAS JUST CLICKED OVER 280000KM.

I have no scientific reason for this statement, but I'm a big fan of staying with the same brand and flavour rather than changing even if they are the same rating...

I've been using magnatec 10w40 in my parents td5. They have only owned it for 12 months though. I have been using the same in there td4 Freelander for 7 years and 120000km and the only engine trouble they have had is a water pump and a cam sensor. It's serviced every 10000km.

I must admit after 45yrs as a fitter that I always sniff oils. The nose knows.

I've run 10w-40 Magnatec in a 600cc sportsbike for 70,000km and a 1000cc for 120,000km and both were making the same horsepower as new. Different oil I know but says something for the brand I guess. If it stands up to running a 13,000rpm motor and gearbox and wet clutch it must be ok stuff.
