Alternator "rattling"
Fun & games at present. Friday: viscous fan bearing. Saturday: replace alternator.
Last week or so noticed an intermittant rattle from alternator area. First thought maybe vacuum pump pulley bearing, as I had renewed the alternator "only" 100K / 4 years ago, but decided to replace the whole shebang (alt and pump assembly) just as well, it was the alternator that was stuffed.
More specifically, the rear bearing was cactus after 100K of sand salt and dirt travels. The alt was still working, but would have shorted at any time. The amount of crap inside the old unit was astounding, its amazing that an electrical device works so long in such exposed conditions.
I found it easier to remove the vacuum pump, belt tensioner, and turbo pipe before removing the old alt, quick and easy, and gives you more room for the fiddly bits.
Remember to have a size 50 torx on hand for the bottom bolt.
All in all, just another typical week of Disco 2 ownership. Now for the 300K complete oil / filter changes.
