    Viscous Fan Bearing heads-up

    2000 Td5 auto sls ace @302K

Had the fan belt off today to check the vacuum pump pulley, incidentally checked for play in the fan pulley: very sloppy.

Ended up replacing the fan bearing, which was covered in an oil/dust slurry which I think has leaked down from the cam seal over the years. The housing had become a reservoir of sorts for the muck, causing accelerated wear of the bearing. Mind you, I have over 300K on the clock, so it must have been due for renewal anyway!

Good idea to check yours when you next have the belt off, or sooner. Better than having the bearing overheat and weld itself inside the housing!

You'd be really unlucky to have it weld to the inside of the housing.

Far more likely is for the inner and outer race to separate. Out of action for a week when it happened to me. Had to put so much heat into the outer race I'm surprised the head didn't warp.

Pedro - for pics, I followed the excellent tutorial on www.discovery2.uk.com
There is no way I could have done the job without it.
My bearing replacement part number was ERR5285
