About 4" lift to fit 255/85-16 or 285/75-16. Its on the limits of rubbing.
Is it simple to put 33" tires on a 2004 D2a? Does it require a simple 2" suspension lift?

I havent fitted those, but I would expect offset rims to make fitment worse if you're not cutting panels./

32" tyres on an increased 30mm offset per wheel rubbed badly on my D2a with a 2" lift.
I currently run brand new 285/75R16 tyres on my D2a with a 3" lift and the LRA flares (guards cut). There is no rubbing. I think that if I went down an inch I may still not have any rubbing issues and be able to get away with it.
As Slunnie said without cutting your guards you'd need a 4" suspension lift for 33" tyres.
My preference is to do the guard cut and a 2" lift and possibly 1" bumpstop extensions for 33's if required, keep the overall vehicle lower, 33's and a 4" lift raises the disco 6" over factory and is not required with a bit of extra work, also a 4" lift raises other costly issues that may not require changing on most 2" lifts.
I run Kumho KL71 33x12.5R18 or (325/60R18) mud tyres on American Racing ATX 18x9" rims with a +32mm offset (maximum +50mm track increase allowed under the NCOP).
On this setup I have not found any rubbing at all, I have had it flexed quiet nicely with the tyres almost touching the top of the cut guards, I think once they may have just been hitting the radius arm at full lock on a steep down hill corner while flexing.
I am on my second suspension setup since removing the factory coils / air bags and I am reasonably happy with it.
Next step is not to increase the lift, but to increase the down travel available through coil choice and much longer shocks.
My opinion is to get better flex on a low lift, keep it more stable, allow the wheels to tuck up into the cut guards as far as possible and only extend bump stops if absolutely necessary.
Whatever you do, the bigger you go, the more it will cost.
The photos below are prior to fitting the extended brake lines, extended ABS lines and front cross member spacers. It is quiet often said that these are not required on a 2" lift, however my fron drive shaft was hitting the cross member and the brake lines where preventing any further down travel prior to the shocks maxing out.

Hi CJT,
Could yuo tell me what brand/model you used for fender flares? Are these D1 flares? Or special for D2?
