Thread: Issues after trailer light upgrade?

I have manual version .SWMBO always checks all lights before we go and the odds are an LED is not going to give up en route.

checked the earth on the trailer, sanded it a bit and sprayed it.
all the ports on the car plug checked ok with the autoelec but I will try the opening up the pins bizzo as your comment about the intermittent contact makes sense (and a bit of rattling on the first journey home enough to get me at least one successful hit of the lights).

Why does my trailer work fine on the generic Toyotamobile it was plugged in to for testing.
Why does a hire trailer with LED's work fine on my car.
Why does my car not like my trailer, since LED upgrade done by professionals

Have worked on where the lights are earthed (filed and sanded it back) Tested earth with multimeter (wasn't good initially, fine afterwards)

I've got no comeback with the service provider , they plugged it in to their vehicle and it worked

Should I waste time booking the trailer in to a different trailer mob, or best to book both trailer and car in to an autoelec to solve it? Thanks

I fitted LED lights to a Kaymar rear bar and the would not operate I then fitted a ballast obtained form auto barn and the LED lights operated correctly

If a professional lights fitter did that wiring job for me I'd thump him. Those crimp joiners are utterly unsuited to the gauge of wire and are likely to be a significant part of the problem. Try tugging the wires out of the crimps, I bet they're loose. I'd suggest getting a soldering iron and redoing all the connectors with solder under heat shrink.

As for the earth lug on the trailer, it's not needed for these lights as they are all plastic bodied. The earth should just be through all the white wires joined back to the trailer plug. Intermittent operation suggests the earth path is currently via the tow ball, which isn't a good earth due to the towing tongue being pinned to the car and the ball being dirty. I also suggest you undo the cover of your trailer plug to see if the wires are properly connected in the screw terminals. That gauge wire should be doubled or tripled up before inserting into the screw connectors. The screws may be crushing the plastic insulation instead of copper if the crimps are anything to go by.

Thanks bee utey "spot on" advice and such an untidy job as well . The bloke doesn't take pride in his work that's for sure, i mean why didn't he finish it off by wrapping the wires and providing strain relief for the finished loom
