What's wrong with my auto? Td5

    Hi all,

So I've a recurring bug whereby the auto will not want to shift out of 1st from takeoff. I've now realised that it does shift but only when holding it to 3600rpm. This however has been intermittent.

Then the last few days the lock up converter hasn't been operating as expected. Like shifting into lock up at 120kmh and when cruising in town just general hard shifts between 3rd lock up and 4th.

I've recently flushed the auto and put a filter kit through it. And yeah, Landys just ticked over 300k.

    Ben.

This sort of thing can happen if your Mass Air Flow sensor is crook.

On a manual ZF 4HP22, the usual answer to poor cold shift out of first would be "dirty governor" but this does not apply to an electronic one which is controlled by The ECU.

The slow lockup could just be cold weather. The lock up will not occur unless engine temperature is above a certain temperature AFAIK about 70C.
The hard shift could again be MAF related.

Have a look at your MAF first , then if not that it's off to the transmission specialist!

Also, it may pay to clean your MAP sensor.

    MAF X 2
My auto was doing similar things, until it decided it wanted a drink of some new ATF.

So I had disconnected the MAF to see if it would fix the delayed lock up which it did seem to fix, but then started the harsh changes and came back with the stuck in 1st fault. I'll plug it back in, see if it makes a difference.

Reconnected, still bad. Especially the jamming in 1st. Gotta hold it to past 3600rpm for it to shift. Might check the fluid again. Only changed it last week, more rubbish might've gotten in there.

My bet is torque converter... 💰💰💰

My last auto did exactly that, sticking in 1st, rough shifts, dodgy lockup.
Had to fit a reco auto, something breaks or wears in the tc and puts metal bits through the rest of the auto.
Sorry, hope it's not. Check the easy things first.

Yeah I checked the oil it looks all good. I've been waiting to the time I'd have to do that. Ah well... I'll take it in and see what happens.

You might need to decide if its a keeper or not,,
if it is-- a modified torque converter should go in with the new auto.
