Front wheel sensor, bearing play, source for new bearings

Hi all,

Well I have been getting some front wheel sensor faults - drivers side only. It may be the sensor as sometimes it throws the lights on with brake squeel, but often it comes on for no apparent reason. I think I may be up for a new wheel bearing (CV and half shaft complete) - I will jack her up and see what play there is. Is any play at all acceptable?

If no play then I will look to remove and clean the old sensor and hole, and if that doesnt fix then a new sensor.

If I need a new CV is the best bet to get aschcroft or similiar HD ones. I run 31 inch tyres and tow a lot and like offroading, so looking for reliability long term. The half shafts were replaced at 100,000k as I used to drop the clutch a bit and twisted the spines...

So these ones are now 150,000k old but there is no clicking from them like the originals so I am thinking that it is just wear.

Hi, if you have play in the wheel and the ball joints are good get new wheel hub, especially if the fault codes you've got are related to air gap, the hub will come with sensor fitted... afaik for D2 you can't get only the CV joints from ashcroft, you'll need the whole kit with half shafts too and that's not cheap at all

The Ashcroft units are a pain, I wouldn't buy them again personally. They don't include the runner for the seal which means you have to remove them off your old units. I've had issues with fitting them to the Ashcroft shafts in exactly the right location.

Due to the large size of the CV they cannot be fitted with the boot fitted. So that's an extra pain (and possible source of dirt entering) everytime you have to remove a refit.

If you don't need them I wouldn't get them.

i didnt want to be the one who sais that cos i thought i missed something but that's exactly how they worked for me too... too much hassle for that amount of money...and they actually eat the seals, leaked after each 1000kms

I don't mind speaking the truth. I have no issues with Ashcroft as a company/supplier - I run their ATB diffs front and rear, their shafts in the rear, their CV's in the front and their HD TC in the auto tranny.

Their CV's are the only product I have an issue with. I am not saying anything negative about the company or people there, just providing an accurate reflection of my experience with the product.
