    A/C Compressor Noisy

    I've noticed the air conditioning compressor in my 206,000 km TD5 is making an expensive sound. When the clutch engages there is a rough whirring sound. If I turn the heating system off it doesn't happen at all.

    I can understand why this is happening - everything else in the car has been replaced or refurbished and the poor old AC was feeling left out!

    Does anyone know if it is possible to have the compressor rebuilt? Or is it best to buy a new one? Is it a component in common with other vehicle makes? Any advice gratefully received.

    I have actually answered my own question.

    Looks like I can source a bearing for $15.75, or a whole clutch kit for $80, and can fix the problem without draining the refrigerant.

    You're right..

    The bits for the compressor clutch can be sourced from Ashdown Ingram.
    There's a small parts kit, coil assembly and pulley c/w installed bearing available from Denso.


    The a/c pump from V8 D2 is the same, and the drive pulley is the same off any D1 with aircon and serpentine belt drive (94? on).


    So there are plenty of alternative sources of bits.

    have to change the bearing before it seizes and spins.


    the nose of the compressor is alloy, the bearings held on with a loose circlip.


    if its shows signs of wear you can replace the housing but easier to replace the compressor.or you can try using a bearing retainer glue.
