    Question Cutting/extending/soldering ABS leads?

    Has anyone managed to successfully cut/solder/extend the ABS leads on the D2?

    I'm getting intermittent three amigo faults caused by the rear. On inspection I have found the cause to be corrosion in the connections. When I clean this up the fault is cleared and stays away until next time the corrosion occurs.

    Due to launching a boat into salt water this occurs rather frequently despite my best efforts in rinsing off afterwards.

    I have purchased two new ABS leads - the new long type that run back into the cabin instead of having a connection into the main wiring hardness, but I'd rather not spend the time/effort running these new leads when I already have fully functional sensors and wiring. Instead I was thinking I could remove the plug/connection section, extend the wiring and hard solder/connect them together - thereby taking away the part causing the fault.

    Has anyone successfully soldered these? I came across a thread a few years ago, which I cannot find now, that had opinions in it that these wires could not be cut and extended as the change in resistance would upset the ABS controller.

    No problems doing this at all Scott, the resistance changes through a plug are far worse than a soldered joint. The possibility is that there may eventually come a time when the harness fails at the bulkhead area, necessitating the long lead fitment, but as logic would suggest you have located the current problem anyway.

    if you decide to solder a piece of wire there use the same kind of wire from other sensor and there will be no trouble... but maybe it would be easyer for you to try a very efficient water repellent electric contact spray in the plug, i hope it' will not be considered advertising, i used it myself in all the ECUs, fuseboxes and exposed plugs cos for me the moisture ingress was the problem(early spring and late autumn are very wet around here) , search for "Nanoprotech electric ..." ... after i treated things with that everything was fine.

    IIRC, back in the very early days of D2 mods, I think it may have been Greg Davis in the US did this to extend the ABS lines. I thought he said they were aluminum or something weird like that and were not particularly straight forward to do. I could be wrong, but it may be worth a quick search either on Discoweb, Pirate or the Disco2Owners Yahoo discussion group I think it was

    I've found Lanolin spray very effective on terminals prone to corrosion.
    It may at least extend the time before cleaning in your case.
