Unhappy What are the Odds? Stripped a bolt in the head before a trip this Friday!!

I'm off to the border track on Friday as a support vehicle for a mate at work who has 15 motor bikes going. Today I was doing an oil and filter change and decided to see if the exhaust bolts were loose. I checked one and it was a bit loose and tightened it. I read on here about how weak the studs are so I was really careful when tightening it.

Then I checked the very first one which was really loose. So I turned the socket about 2 turns and it just fell off I didn't even put much pressure through it. And then I had a look at the one under it and noticed that it wasn't even there I think the previous owner must have busted the other stud in there and just left it.

My question is.... Will it be ok to drive like this for the weekend?
I took it around the block and gave it a bit of a hard run and it doesn't seem to be leaking from there yet.
The timing couldn't be any worse really. So the very first bolts are both missing. It looks like it is going to be a real pain to have them taken out because there is very little room to get in there and use an ezy out. What are my options??

    Thanks

    Chris

In an ideal world it should be fixed before you go.
You may get access by removing the air conditioner compressor, you won't need to remove the hoses.

To answer the can I use it question I had few thoughts...
-Would you have done the trip if you didn't know?
-As I see it you'll loose a little pressure and possibly warp the manifold if it gets to hot.
-What would you do if you found out while on a trip?

I'd probably go but it comes down to the possible extra repair expense when you get back.
Then again it's not my rig or money.

Yeah I know what you mean Kyle. I drove it to work and it seems fine so far. I went to toorak tractor in Braeside and he's going to do it for me on Thursday. I'd rather have it right, and running properly. Plus there will be 3 Toyotas there. Can't be seen with the bonnet up I'd never hear the end of it

The second one of the Toyota's puts their bonnet up, you'll be glad you fixed it.

Never tighten exhaust bolts, without a torque wrench , to the correct torque value, and in the correct sequence. I do it every 5,000 Km's, when I service the engine [ TD5] every time , the rear bolt is below torque. If you don't have a RAVE DVD, I suggest you get one. Bob

Something breaks the week before a trip!!...... sounds about normal to me

Both my D2's used to pull the same trick on me every trip....but never let me down seriously when I was away

I think you are doing the right thing getting it sorted before you go Sprover.

Hope you have a great trip......

Don't fret, they were probably stretched/ broken to begin with, you did nothing wrong. A common Td5 trait I'm afraid. Make certain they machine the manifold as it WILL be slightly warped. The next studs will then stretch/ break. I drill out to 5/16" ( or 8.5mm) then tap to 10X1.5 , using M10 studs for the front 2 and rear 2. Not had any issues after this.

    Thumbs up

Thanks for all the replies guys. Fortunately I was lucky enough to get it in to be fixed for Thursday , but wont have the time to get the manifold machined. I will get that done properly when time and funds allow. Along with bigger studs to replace the crappy Landrover ones.

And I had heard and read all the stories about them breaking because they are so weak. I literally could have broken it by doing it up with my fingers. That's how much pressure it needed to break. Anyway, hopefully once those 2 bolts are heli coiled it will be good to go for the weekend.

    Cheers

    Chris
