    Td5 or tdv6

Hi every one. I have a fair amount of reading lately about discos as I an going to change over from my td5 130. I have had the 130 for 5 years or so and just love the drive line. But I am hearing great things about the tdv6 and it's almost swaying me to get one.

I am after people's views about the two vehicles. Thoughts on reliability and power etc. any thing that is a pro or con for either drive line or vehicle in general.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks Jim

Unless I am mistaken the Tdv6 did not come in until the Discovery 3. But if you are asking whether D2 or D3, I don't think the engine is the most significant difference.

Yeah I am interested in d2 or d3. Not just the engine but anything that could be an issue either way. Also just people's preference I guess??

    Mate.
    I have just gone from a TD5 D2 to a D4.
The V6 diesel is in a different leauge to the TD5.
Then there is all the other improvements when they went from D2 to D3.
There is a big issue with the oil pump in the D3,reaserch it and change it if you buy one.
Also,be aware, many of the early cheaper D3s are coil sprung, look for the air suspension and terrain response options.
Visit the D3 D4 RRS area for more info.

Thanks Andrew. What's the main difference? Power or smoothness?? I think I need to take them both for a drive and compare. You wouldn't go back to a td5 then? Cheers Jim

    I have a D2 and a D3, they are vastly different vehicles.

Both are getting old so be prepared for some expense in keeping either going. The D3 is far ahead of the D2 as a daily driver and if your not planning on major mods then a D3 with Terrain Response and air bag suspension will run circles around a standard D2 in the rough stuff. However a heavily modded D2 will go places a heavily modded D3 won't.

For heavy towing the diesel D3 easily beats a diesel D2 hands down.

Carrying capacity well the D3 has heaps more space.

As I said both are getting old and both will cost good money to keep them going properly, however the D3 will cost heaps more if serious maintenance is required, which can be fairly regular.

Which is the better to own and drive? Despite the extra expense required to keep it on the road the D3 is a far better all round vehicle.

By the way while my D2 is a V8 I have also driven a TD5 D2, again the D3 wins here, quieter, smoother more powerful and a all round nicer engine.

    Good luck on your decision.
    Cheers,
    Terry

Thanks terry a good perspective. On my 130 I have managed to do all my maintenance my self and I suppose that would be the bonus of a d2 as I would continue this but the d3 is a whole new kettle of fish, but they are a tempting option.

Yes jimbob, my feelings entirely - D3/4 is a quantum leap in technology, but it has both advantages and disadvantages.

Thing that amuses me is the description of the D3 as 'old'. Seeing my two vehicles are 28 and 44 years old (and I regard both as reliable and low maintenance cost), this makes me laugh!

I'm probably also making a similar jump.

I started looking at a late TD5 Disco, but just not enough cargo space when your coming from a defender.

The electronics on a D3 look daunting. However I've had a good look over a 2005 TDV6 with 340,000km and it went good. Maintenance is the key with any car, keeping on top of repairs as required. In the past I have put up with issues only to be hit with a huge bill when they got fixed at one time.

The following is what I've learnt. Look for a late D3 with the service history, engine belts need doing at 160,000km and trans service at 80,000 intervals. They can be heavy on brakes. Some have had diffs replaced (like a defender). A rear e-locking diff was an option. You can't lock the center diff the computer does this for you. Air bag springs last approx 10 years, the compressor less sometimes. There is a kit to inflate air bag suspension if compressor fails. The suspension is programmed to lower at 50km/h I think which is a problem for beach or track work. There is a kit to overcome this.

I have just made this exact jump. Going from a 2000 Td5 auto to a 2006 TDV6 auto. First thing you'll notice is the TDV6 is much quieter. And faster. I loved my Td5 and they're a fantastic car. But for that extra refinement and power, the TDV6 takes it.

+1 on the more luggage space too. Much better organised in the D3s too.

    Ben.
